It doesn’t help that single player DKCR and DKCR with two players are two different games. And not the way Rock Band or NSMBWii were, but in that Diddy Kong’s got special abilities Donkey doesn’t, making two player far easier and far more enjoyable.
Minecraft is great, though I’m (quite tentatively) in the camp of wanting it to have, not better defined gameplay, but better defined game mechanics. I think it would kill it to have things like objectives and ‘game modes’, it’s special precisely because it doesn’t go down that route.
But the most fun I have is definitely in Survival, and I’d like the enemies to be better integrated into the organic goals players set for themselves. So certain enemies have certain abilities that allow them to overcome defences, to an extent. But mining for better materials allows you to build defences that can better fend off these enemies. So an enemy might have a jumping ability, another might be able to dig away at certain blocks, another might be able to fly, etc. The Creeper is already a great mechanic in this respect.
All of which would, I think, make the organic undirected gameplay more satisfying, and there wouldn’t be an end goal or anything like that. At least that’s what I feel.
I would fully agree with all of this. SMG remains an utterly brilliant game, but SMG2 just feels a little bit too by the numbers. And the heavy inclusion of Yoshi loses it points with me. I hate Yoshi.
Similarly, I will never bother with DKCR, because I have hated every single DKC game and don’t expect DKCR to change my mind.

I’m thrilled to see Minecraft in the top five. Back when I cast my vote I figured it would be like voting for some obscure Green party candidate during a presidential election, little did I know at the time it would take the poll by storm.
After having playing a lot of Fallout: NV in the last week I can honestly say it doesn’t belong anywhere in the top ten, the game is a disaster.
I haven’t played Mass Effect yet, but once I buy and finish the first one I’ll definitely give it a shot.

That is a pretty cool list of games. I look forward to trying and/or finishing 12 out of the 16 in that list. I think I got to play less of the top games this year than any prior year we’ve had these awards. This will be a nice guide to prioritize my gaming time.

Heh, actually the game I played for the most hours this year was the winner of the 3rd annual official Unofficial Qt3 awards: Fallout 3. I played through the GOTY edition back in January/February. Since then the games I played the most have been mostly games released this year. Just Cause 2, Bioshock 2, Red Dead Redemption (only got about half way, but still spent a lot of time on), Supreme Commander 2 and Civilization 5 out of the top 16, but also quite a few games that didn’t make the top 16, like Pinball FX 2, Pacman CE DX, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metro 2033, Limbo, Heavy Rain and for multiplayer with friends it was the trio of Bad Company 2, Halo Reach and Black Ops.
The only game this year that I regretted spending a lot of time on turned out to be Red Dead Redemption. (OK, maybe SupCom 2 as well. I just never got the same satisfaction out of it as I did the original SupCom, once that game finally clicked for me). Everything else was pretty satisfying. Even a game like Heavy Rain, while not truly excellent, was still worth experiencing and I’m glad I played through it. It was a pretty good year for games, even outside the Qt3 top 16, I thought.
