You would think so, but in my experience if Windows is not fully up to date, then several apps don’t update.
I went and updated Windows to the very latest and greatest. Uninstalled the Xbox app. Just updated my nVidia drivers too. Still get the same stupid error. Also for some freaking reason the Xbox app (even the newly installed one) keeps complaining about an old expired credit card that I’ve already removed as a payment method and is no longer associated with any subscriptions. I’m going to sign out of it and sign in again, maybe that will help.
Do I have to associate the EA account with my Windows/Xbox account ahead of time or something? Is that what I’m missing?
Microsoft stuff is a fucking PITA sometimes.
Found a workaround described in a post here BTW, in case anyone else is having the same problem:
Bah, spoke too soon. Yeah I got a beta version of EA Desktop installed, and as a test I installed C&C Remastered. Tried to fire it up, and 3 or 4 minutes later, nothing, and Task Manager reports it’s “Not Responding.”
Wow, talk about not ready for prime time.

Prey plays VERY nicely on the XSX. It’s a very cool game.
I am super not gud! But I quite like Nier. (I’m playing it on easy because: not gud.) I don’t remember the tutorial any more; it’s been a long time. But I’m playing by randomly mashing buttons and I find it enjoyable.

Fired up Squadrons. Then spent 10 minutes in the very first mission trying to track down the last X-Wing, which seemed like it was inside the structures or something, because I couldn’t ever find it. Alt-F4’d and uninstalled.
I’m about 4 missions into Squadrons and I’m having a good time. I doubt I’ll dig too deeply into it and I don’t know if I’ll even touch multiplayer, but that’s ok too.

I tried out Desperados 3 and am really enjoying it. Only played the original a zillion years ago but this is really well done.
Happy to report that the reason I couldn’t get the EA Play C&C Remastered working was that I had closed some intermediate command prompt type window it depended on.
I installed Battlefield 1 and it worked fine, and looked awesome on my i7 6700+1080 machine.
…BUT why oh why does Windows 10 stop games from saving to the Documents folder by default*? I had to replay the whole intro again today, as well as the story of the British tank driver.
*You have to specifically allow each game to save in a subfolder thereof.
I managed to zoom through Journey to the Savage Planet before it leaves GP on the 31st. Really fun game- like an updated Metroid Prime, but with humor. And most of the humor was actually funny- a rare feat- from the chatty, sadistic AI companion guiding you along (think Cortana mixed with Tiny Tina and you get the picture) to the hilarious videos from the (4th Best!) Space Exploration company’s CEO, it’s all really well done. I got through about 80% of the various collectibles and beat the game in about 15 hours, which was pretty much perfect- it didn’t feel rushed, but also didn’t overstay its welcome.
I’ve been playing Monster Sanctuary since it has touch controls that seem to work well on my tablet. It’s a cross between Metroid and Pokemon. I’ve only played for a handful of hours so far but it’s been fun. I’m not sure if the depth is there to keep me playing all the way through but I’ve enjoyed my time thus far.
Octopath Traveller, Yakuza 6, and Genesis Noir are all up on (console) GP now.
Speaking of Yakuza, if someone was just going to play one game in the series that’s on GP (I understand that the new one that came out in November was pretty different?), which should it be? Which is the yakuza-ist of the games?
Oh man, I hope someone plays Genesis Noir and posts some impressions because I did not get the demo they had out a while back.

Octopath Traveller is a REALLY, really good game. It was my gateway into more JRPG style rpgs, soemthing which I had previously not really liked in any way. Muc recommended!
I played the demo. I just looked up my impressions and I wrote it “was, like, totally trippy, man. Never ‘played’ anything quite like it. Kind of a weird jazz art project.”. And yeah, that matches my memory. I’ll probably kick it around this weekend.

I’ve played Yakuza Kiwami to the end a couple or three times (these are DEEP games if you want to chase down every sub-story), and have played through big chunks of both Yakuza Zero and Yakuza Kiwami 2. Not everyone will agree with me, but I would recommend starting with Yakuza Kiwami, the remastered original game.
YK does a great job of teaching you how the series plays without demanding more time than you want to put in. If you want to race to the end and just do the main story, that can be done. If you want to develop Kiryu into an unstoppable ass-kicking machine who tears through colosseum tournaments and everything else in the game, that can be done too. If you want to explore every sub-story and amusement the game has to offer, get a guide and get after it (seriously, some stuff is easily missed).
Yakuza Zero is the other obvious starting point, and it’s a great, well-polished game that deals with a lot of the cool characters in YK, and has you walking around in Kamurocho and Osaka, but I suspect it won’t be as meaningful if you don’t know what has happened in YK and YK2 and walked around those areas before. I’m not crazy about the combat system changes and odd skill advancement systems in YK2, but I don’t think they hurt the overall experience. YK2 or any higher-numbered game is not where I would advise starting.
That’s my exact experience with this game in PSVR…with extra pukey-ness! Dammit, I was hoping that this would be easier in the flat-screen version. (I might still try it anyways, cos TIE Fighter!)
And about the XGP app auto-updating itself…my experience is to run the MS Store app myself everyday and kick it to check for updates. It simply doesn’t check on its own often enough.
@Don_Quixote Start with either Yakuza Zero or Kiwami (1). Or buy Yakuza Like a Dragon!
(blah blah follows: Zero is a prequel to Yakuza 1, while Kiwami (1) is a remake of 1 using Zero’s engine. Kiwami has some references to things in Zero, but probably just for extra giggles. Like a Dragon is #7 but is a brand new unrelated story.)
(Oops, didn’t see @RickH 's excellent explanation. I also played Kiwami first!)
For those of you who may have missed the id@Xbox show earlier today on Twitch (and at 4 hours, I don’t think anyone could blame you if you did) here is an article listing the games that will have day one Game Pass releases. I forget if this was already announced, but apparently Stalker 2 is on the list -
