It’s possible, but I can’t see why in the space of two to three decades it would have entirely gone away as an everyday word in American English. I was born in 1961, and I think I first heard the word from a then young Mom from New Zealand at around age nine or ten ('70-71). Before that I’d only ever heard “dress.”

Honestly, knowing that people in the UK say “sol-der” makes this less annoying, because maybe it was just a British voice actress saying it.

At first, I thought they were just saying it wrong, and somehow no one involved with the game knew how to say solder.

You think that’s funny, have you heard a Brit say “jaguar”? It’s delightful!

There is a definite difference between a frock and a dress, though I imagine only someone who is really up on fashion would know it.

As an everyday term it’s certainly more of a commonwealth-type word, but I do remember it being used in a slangy way in old Hollywood movies, as in “put on your best frock and let’s go paint the town!” or something.

Don’t get me started on jaguar!

In the TV ads, Mark Strong says “Jag-you-are.” Is that it?

Oh yes. Delightful.

Used to work with a British guy, I would always ask him “Hey Martin, what do you call those black tigers? I forget the name.” He would often reply by allowing I might be interested, at my leisure, in buggering myself.

Have you heard a Floridian say it? It’s awful.

This is why the Jacksonville NFL team can’t be the one to relocate to London.

Wait, how would “Florida Man” say it? ;-)

Surprised he didn’t just say “pahn-ther.”

He was a bit of a gormless prat, as the Brits would put it.

Zoologist response: hypermelanistic tiger

N…o.

Three slacks, like the brits, but instead of jag-yoo-are, it’s jag-why-er.

The one positive is that it inspired a character in a superhero rpg with electrical powers who was a navy lawyer… JAGWire.

Coming to Game Pass in Spring 2022:

My favorite is Aluminium.

Aluminum is what I was most offended by when I first came to the U.S. How dare they change the name of an element of the Periodic table? It’s Aluminium damn it! But of course, I got used to it, like everything else.

My favorite BBC pronounciations over the last couple of decades, living in the U.S., have been:

President Boosh
President Barack O’ Bomer.

Neat. Sort of a Ghost of Tsushima but 3D with a fixed camera, looks like? I’ll have to find out more about it. Still have to finish Ghost of Tushiima.

The visuals in the Trek to yomi game are exceptionally well done.

At first I was like, “oh, some land black and white filter thing,” but something about it looks amazing. I honestly don’t even know what it is about it.
