@mono your credit card company might have got spooked by all the $5 charges going through. Mine did, I had to verify that I made the transactions.

Thanks, @Chappers, but it’s not my card. I don’t get to click the payment method before the error kicks in. Then I created a new dummy account just to test and it let me buy the $1 trial no problem.

It might be related to my extending the initial Xbox gold deal in March, to April of 2021. Won’t let me extend further? I’m not certain. I’m not going to sweat it. The fact is, I’m deal hunting, but honestly don’t play Gamepass games often.

Yeah, I’m still debating whether it’s worth it to me, even at $5 / month. One factor might be the EA Pass and EA’s sports games. Can I get those with the PC-only pass, or would I have to pay for the ultimate edition?

You don’t need Ultimate for EA Pass on PC. Here’s the relevant quote from the original announcement (bold mine):

Today, we’re excited to announce the next step in this journey. We are teaming up with Electronic Arts to provide Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC members with an EA Play membership at no additional cost starting this holiday. This means Ultimate members can enjoy EA Play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Windows 10 PCs, and Xbox Game Pass for PC members get EA Play on Windows 10.

(You do need Windows 10 sounds like, which I know is relevant to some at Qt3 who still refuse to upgrade to Windows 10).

Thanks; that’s good news. I do have Windows 10. It’d be nice to play Madden or NBA on the PC with my Xbox controller, included in a $5/year price (if I can get that $5 extension like others have here).

Alas, NHL21 still won’t be on PC, so I guess I’d need the Ultimate for that.

I was able to extend mine for a year before my boredom set in :D Fortunately, had no technical issues. Will probably extend it for another year tomorrow when I’m sitting in front of the tv watching it.

That’s right, once you have Ultimate, you can’t get normal Gold, normal Xbox Game Pass or Game Pass for PC, you can only extend Ultimate. So if you redeem a code for any of the others, it gets converted to Ultimate time according to the chart that was posted above.

I tried Hotshot Racing tonight. I have to say, I really like the look of it. That surprised me, since I’m not a fan of retro-graphics usually. But there’s something about the clean lines and flat colors that’s really appealing. I played the first Grand Prix on normal. Everything from the sound effects to the heavy rubberbanding reminds me of arcade racing games from the 90s, the kind you put quarters into.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t play super smooth on Xbox. You’d expect a game that looks so retro to be a rock solid 60 frames a second, but it hitches and has dropped frames, it just doesn’t feel smooth. Forza Horizon plays smoother and the graphics in that are so much better it’s like it’s from a different millennium. It just goes to show that you can have powerful or weak consoles, there’s always going to be shitty programming on everything.

Back on the bandwagon! I got like six months for a couple bucks due to promos for the PC and Ultimate, and even wasted the last two months of it (cough cough Monster Hunter Iceborne). As a bonus, I stopped early June and when I reupped today it gave me the $1 promo for the first month. Not sure how many months I’ll lock in - I’ve gone till Feb but we’ll see how I feel by next Wed night. I guess it kind of worked - I paid way more this time around than last time so … I guess the marketing worked? Looking forward to trying out Star Renegades and Disgaea 4!
