I haven’t seen this in a long time. Great weird ending, from the vanishing battlefield (!) to that classic Leone stand-off. While Clint and Lee are doing their typical squinty tough guy stuff, Eli Wallach is the one holding the whole movie together. Was he always this good?
Man, do I need to find a widescreen showing of Once Upon a Time in the West.
I thought the alamo drafthouse was doing a spaghetti western special next weekend (all you can eat spaghetti, foccacia, and Caeser salad while watching the film). But, they’re screening the “Call Me Trinity” trilogy, not the Leone’s “Once upon a time…”
How about a canoe trip to watch a screening of Deliverence instead?
Wow. That’s the first time I’ve seen “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” used as anything but a cheesy analogy or ratings system in a decade… I never dreamed this topic would actually be about the film.
Yeah, when the movie’s on cable TV every weekend. Every time that movie comes on, my wife figures out something for me to do in order to keep me from watching it. Hell, I almost bought the DVD boxed set (the one with A Fistful of Dollers, For a Few Dollers More, and G, B, and U. ).
These are, to me, great popcorn movies, if you have any interest in Westerns at all.
G,B & U is a great film, and to see how easy it can be easily ruined by college professors trying to be “kewl”; I showed the last hour or so in my business ethics class just to explain the concept of the prisoner’s dilemma and problems of coordination that stem from cooperation/competition for limited resources (like the kind business are engaged in.) In the evaluations for the class the students loved the film but said they had no idea why I was showing it. Good thing I didn’t go with Barton Fink. :)
