There’s a lot of self-interest in it, sure, but they are pursuing an ideology. McConnell didn’t have to e.g. pull the SCOTUS seat heist to get re-elected and keep his position of power. He did it because he is pursuing an agenda to get conservative ideologues on the Court where they can settle disputes in favor of conservative principles. Graham’s position is perhaps less secure, but he would have to go very far into never-Trump-land to lose re-election. What he seems to want, basically, is holy war. Or any war, really, but the holy ones are the best ones.
