I have a haitus hernia and reflux from hell and was prescribed 40mg omeprazole. I only take it when reflux is bad now and the docs cut me down to 20mg I remember reading something bad about it but it was after I had stopped taking it regularly. Didn’t realise it was bone frailty bloody hell.

acid is important in getting calcium from some food, so reduced acid can mean reduced calcium. it doesnt affect water soluble calcium or calcium in dairy products. calcium citrate is available as a supplement and is water soluble.
the biggest study shows a 50% increased risk of hip fracture in the eldery who use a ppi, but only if they also are smokers. there was no increased risk if they were nonsmokers, so the jury is still out on causality.
for all people in the study the risk of hip fracture was 1.5 per 1000 person-years, and the risk if taking a poi was 2 per 1000 person-years, so an absolute increase of 0.5 per 1000 people per year. Certainly an increased risk, but some people would likely say worth it for the stomach pain relief.
