Let’s assume for a minute that these individuals somehow managed to get into their adult lives without ever being educated on some pretty basic history and managed to work in Palmdale, where 71% of the population is either black and or Latino and still, still they manage to remain ignorant of history. Are they completely removed from basic news? They haven’t seen the dozen or so articles we get about this very subject about this very problem ranging from college campuses, locker rooms and factories where hanging a noose is still a threat and an effort of intimidation.

Despite what some people might think, these situations are not unique to the south and how oblivious does someone have to be to claim this late in the game that they don’t know something like this. It’s been in the news… multiple times, but probably not something a station like Fox News would show.

They may have, but they may also have found the noose in a storage room and been surprised by it and not really thought about it as a symbol of racism but as this weird thing they found. I don’t know.

I’ve read a dozen articles or more about the OK symbol but I still flashed it, because I didn’t think. Does that make a me a racist?

When I see a noose I still first associate it with hangings but then I correct that thinking and think of lynchings. Does that make me a racist? The noose was also a not uncommon Halloween decoration, and I don’t think it was meant in a racist way but as symbol of death, because spooky!

I already pointed out why that is different, not only because you aren’t actually claiming that you didn’t know so much as you didn’t think about it in the moment, but the okay sign being taken over by white supremacy is quite new. It’s a losing battle, but it’s happening right now.

I don’t know why you’re trying to link the atrocities of lynchings to the okay sign, but they are very different things. Lynchings happened. We have photographs of these murders, actual murders. It’s not a minor thing at all, and again, type noose into news and see how many different articles you find… just in a year. These are current intimidation techniques being used today, threats of murder.

I’m not trying to say that a noose and the OK sign are equivalent. I’m suggesting that people do things without really thinking about it or realizing the implications.

Yes. I imagine it is easier not to really think about these sort of things when you’re not the target of the kind of death that follows it. It’s not a good excuse, and not everyone gets that. For some people, it’s not even an educational experience… it can be your first moment of true terror when you realize the depravity that lives in the human beings who created horrors that openly ran across this country, once sanctioned by this country, and then understand those same people exist today, have power, and are more than willing to do it again.

That’s what hanging a noose represents.
