“some of President Trump’s supporters” I’m not sure I ever see any of his supporters actually defend him on the vast majority of things he does. It’s always deflect deflect deflect. For the things they do support him on, it’s usually only at a very high/abstract level.

Psst, that was a direct paraphrase from 1984.
The GOP stands for something. It has a purpose, and that purpose is readily discernible by examining the results of actual GOP governance. What the GOP wants is low taxes for the wealthy, legal immunity for the wealthy and to give the wealthy an opportunity to loot the state and its citizens. It is also the party of racism, though I imagine many of them would happily abandon the racism if they could figure out how to sell their agenda without it.
The vast majority of Americans were stone cold racist in the 1950s starting with LBJ.
And yet some people managed to be better than their times

If you want to say that Buckley was mediocre, and lacked the intellectual and moral courage to come to correct conclusions about the world, that’s fine. Most of us are mediocre. What I don’t understand is why you still pay attention to and respect someone who was so thoroughly wrong. Why not pay attention to people who come to correct conclusions and have the courage to stand up for them?
I’m sorry was there post I made praising Buckley? Cause I know I’m getting old but I just don’t remember making one.
My only point was that being racist in the 1950s was bipartisan. Good for Bernie for being one of the few white American’s who wasn’t, but Bernie was wrong about a lot of other things like support for communist dictators.
I constantly mention Buckley in conversation when someone invokes a Ben Shapiro or similar as an example of modern conservative intellectualism. And then I point out how far the movement has fallen.

Uh… You don’t think Sanders was wrong about stuff? Like maybe some of his views supporting communist dictatorships?

Ben Shapiro Nd any reference to intellectual? Lol, he just the village idiot troll.
Btw, Stuart Stevens was on The Bulwark podcast today, and he was absolutely blistering, particularly the second half of the show. Just finished listening, would highly recommend. I should have his book tomorrow.
Girlfriend isn’t gonna leave you until she has another man ready to go. She stay with the loser she got, even if she hatin’, until her next alpha is ready to rule.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the Stuart Stevens of the world. With any luck he’s just making the best of being one of the first rats off the boat.
But don’t get it twisted. This is a piece of shit selling his outrage at the stench of sewage that permeates our communities. Wasn’t until 2020 that you realized any of this? Mmk.
Books don’t sell themselves. Wake me up when he testifies.

2016, no? And there’s multiple former Republicans in our community who had the realization at the same time.
I think the Trump nomination and the obsequiousness of the GOP tore a lot of blinders off.
Testifies to what? He’s been very honest in recent interviews that political consultants (such as himself)
have no high ground of any sort, and are pretty scummy. He’s not some rat jumping off the Trump train at some opportune moment.
He’s been the most self reflective of any of the so called never Trumpers, and has been for a long time.
Sorry, the 2020 bit was referring to this Stevens dude, not anyone here.
Ok? He can have a window seat while the investment bankers and oil executives have to suffer in the aisles, I guess?

Sorry I wasn’t clear. What I was saying was that Stevens has been vocally opposed to Trump and the GOP since 2016 and opposed him when he was running against Hillary.
That was great, wasn’t it? I loved his comment about the Lincoln Project’s last bastion status as a sign of how far things have fallen: “We wouldn’t even vote for ourselves!”
Actually, you should listen to the podcast, Adam. I bet you’d find it compelling. He’s not being a book-slinging opportunist; he’s making a heartfelt confession. You don’t have to forgive him, but don’t write him off as someone “selling outrage,” as if there’s something disingenuous about his current politics. He’s got a pretty clear-eyed view from the inside of what’s happened to the GOP.

Going back to the relief bill – will the GOP Senators realize that the economy will go off a cliff if something substantial isn’t passed yesterday?
