True, but poplar would be an odd and overpriced choice.

Yes, I am being unnecessarily critical of his purchase for comic effect.

The funniest? part is how he’s buying a piece of wood like Trump holds up a Bible. ā€œThis is what you guys do with this stuff, right?ā€ he says, waving it around, right before stammering under his breath ā€œwhere’s my driver again anyway?ā€

Of course guys like Shapiro are self aware enough that buying a random piece of wood like he’s never been into a hardware store before is a meta enough statement that he might well be doing that on purpose.

That sums it up perfectly.

Well, you’re not wrong.

Exactly! He’s holding it in a way that says, ā€œWhat do people do with this bizarre object?ā€

Some things about Shapiro holding his wood:

  1. Having a piece of lumber put into a plastic bag is pretty hilarious.
  2. That piece of lumber is like, 3 feet long. I didn’t even know you could buy a piece of lumber that small at Home Depot… normally you’d be buying stuff in 8ft lengths. That’s like a piece of scrap wood from the cutting section.

I mean it’s probably the cheapest thing you can buy that demonstrates that you went to Home Depot. When people who have never gone to a home improvement store or ever actually held a hammer think about Home Depot, I’m sure they think ā€œlumberā€!

Ben Shapiro has never done eight hours of manual labor in his life.

They have ā€œfinishedā€ pieces of plywood and hardwood for, i guess, cabinets ect, usually 1/2" x 2’ x 4’ or 3’ x 5’, 4’ x 6’ ect. I was going to get some for some garage cabinets actually and cut them to fit.

But yea, that’s so small it might well be on brand to ā€œbuyā€ a piece of scrap lumber, ie, get it for free. In fact that might well be why he has it in a plastic bag! Because it’s ā€œevidenceā€ that he bought it! No, i didn’t just pick random piece of wood off the ground, look, it’s in a bag!

Ah, ok I guess that makes sense.

Not sure why you’d buy, like, ONE piece of finished lumber.

I guess if you are someone who literally never goes to a hardware store, ever, and has no actual need for tools.

Seems like if I were going to Home Depot to show my support, I’d probably just buy something I needed, like a new tool or something, rather than a random piece of wood.

Construction lumber is typically in 8’ or 12’ lengths. Hardwood ā€œappearanceā€ or ā€œprojectā€ boards come in varying lengths. Some in fixed price regular sizes some in random sizes by linear or board foot.

(I’ve spent way too much time in home depots trying to a few decent boards)

I wish i could find some decent siding - I mean even hardy plank, not just wood. It’s all bottom of the barrel siding now. Old fashioned lap siding is apparently a high end thing now? Basically all the hardware stores near me are almost sold out of wood all the time.

All lumber prices have spiked to ridiculous heights over the last year or so.

Mills slowed down last year due to covid. Both due to the actual disease and an expected drop in demand. Instead everyone stuck at home led to a huge demand for home remodeling (and probably a lot of people like me thought ā€œSince I am stuck at home I should get into woodworkingā€, which probably didn’t help). Lumber demand shot up just as supply catered.

Wait, I just realized what he might be building. A friend.

Goddamn I hope we figure this Ben Shapiro shit out soon, I can’t concentrate on work.

I thought that was his phone he’s holding in the other hand at first, but it’s the receipt.

Siri, how does human work?

That way he remembers where the receipt is so he can turn around and return it after the picture.

To me this is the funniest part of it all. What Ben did was draw attention to Home Depot. It wasn’t on anyone’s radar, but now that Ben is standing around with his wood in his hand, everyone knows that Home Depot is being shitty.

They were flying under the radar on this. Now everyone knows.

The hilarity of Home Depot basically saying: ā€œWe’re not getting involved in politics,ā€ and then Ben goes and awkwardly buys some wood thus dragging them into a political spotlight? Perfection.

The best result of this for me, being someone who goes to Home Depot regularly and already doesn’t like Lowe’s for their earlier political support, would be for Home Depot to pull away and make a statement against Ben Shapiro now. Then I could continue going there in earnest.
