As an aside that exchange reminds me that in addition to fantastic direction, camera work, acting, etc., the original Alien had truly outstanding writing. Arguably one of the best written, if not THE best written, sci-fi movie of all time.

It’s such a grotesque thing for that character to say: you have my sympathies. He’s a “goddamn robot”! He doesn’t have feelings! How can he have sympathies?

It’s very much in the same vein as “thoughts and prayers” offered by people who have no intellectual integrity and no moral compass.
