Arguably forcing Conservatives to change, and their pushback to being forced, has been the basic unsolvable dilemma in American history.
There’s a pretty good case that the solution to Conservatism today is to let them fail on their own. Of course to do that, we all get to go down with the ship.
Besides hate for immigrants and taxes and love of guns, what do conservatives even want? Just a return to the days of white men running everything? It’s still mostly white men running things, isn’t it?

I mean, you know, that’s a book and a whole university department in answering that quesiton.
But the just-between-us, deep-naval-gazing and tmi-nobody-ask-and-nobody-cares-what-i-think explanation, I think deep down it’s to be able to say the shit people won’t let you say (these people are dirty, poor, ugly, stupid, lazy, fat, and it’s all their fault). A puritanical echo wanting to enforce morality (obviously Christian, Protestant morality) on the whole country. A desire to finally win the culture war, to be the ones pushing back against the prevailing liberal cultural dominance.
Change is always imposed on them. It’s a distortion of the stupid US political system, the winner-take-all nature of it, the minority party gets nothing nature of it. They’ve always been able to blame “the other people”, they never have to be the ones responsible for the consequences of their decisions.
I might argue that throughout the Caribbean the white land owners got pwned in the Latin American revolutions, like chased down and hung by the thousands, and the American slave owning conservatives have never had to face the music in that way from within their own culture/territories. The Union descending upon them was the Great Other; you didn’t finally concede you were wrong, they just defeated your state’s forces at the Battle of Whatever Hill. What really needed to happen were massive slave riots that burned them out of house and home and hung them from the rafters. Combined with the religious Puritanical extremism and then the post-Civil War revanchism, Conservatism survived and morphed into this weird thing it is today, this thing that nurses grievances that the bizarre and dysfunctional US system paradoxically enables instead of resolves, as the US system is effectively unable to resolve political differences, only amplify if not actually nourish them.
Pretty much this, and to be able to say the n word, the d word for “eyetalians”, the r word for Muslims, the k word for Jews, etc. without social opprobrium.
In this connection I’m reading a military sci-fi book called Weapons of Choice by some Aussie author (John Birmingham) where some physics experiment out in the Pacific goes horribly wrong, creates some temporal wormhole and transports a modern carrier group to mid-1942. You can imagine how most of the powers that be respond to non-whites, women and gay people being among the enlisted people and officers from our time showing up in their world. They’re agog at the modern tech and weaponry, but as far as that other stuff, not so much.

This is a somewhat new phenomenon. From '70-'00, it definitely wasn’t the case. Arguably from 1880-1930+ as well.
What has happened (recently) is that Conservatives don’t Govern anymore, they just campaign. They’ve turned Governing into a zero-sum game, when it’s only elections which should be.
