Lol. Fuck Bob Dole, and fuck anyone who thinks the post-Goldwater GOP and their voters are anything but self-serving traitorous cowards.

Hahahahah no

That pair? Eisenhower, hands down.

This is the perfect attitude for winning elections, a great way of convincing Republicans who don’t like Trump or Trumpism to vote for your side.

I’m not sure who the Trumpers are going to hang first, Timex or me for being traitors, or progressive because of your views. I’m just sure that many of them will be happy to hang all of us.

Are cowards and traitors. Yes it sucks that we live under a system that disproportionately empowers said assholes, but that does not change the fact that their incuriousness and lack of empathy are inexcusable failures of basic humanity.

You don’t seem to get it. If you don’t pretend to be nice to these Republicans, by doing basic human decency things like saying nice things about dead folks on the day they die. Then, these Republicans will see how you treat folks like Bob Dole, and decide to stick with the Republican party, cause as bad Trump/Trumpers is the Democrats are worse. Trumpers will regain control of Congress and maybe even the White House.

Don’t alienate future former Republicans.

Bob Dole endorsed Trump and voted for him twice. Whatever else he represents, it isn’t anti-Trumpism Republicans.

Isn’t this the soft form of saying they’re only Nazis because we were mean to them? That we made them Nazis?

You really have to think this passage through, I think. You’re saying that people who speak ill of a dead man are worse than people who tried to overthrow the government. Worse than people who actively tried to make a pandemic worse. Is that really what you mean?

The left’s version of the trumpers are always ready to show us how being a mindless danger to the country is not partisan.

And a hearty fuck you to anyone who thinks intolerance of awful people, bankrupt ideologies, and naked inhumanity is the real intolerance.

People are more than the caricatures created in your far left echo chambers.

As long as you fail to grasp such a basic concept about the world, then you are as big a danger to functional democracy as anyone, because you are incapable of coexisting with other human beings.

A few years from now, when Trump dies, we’re going to get treated to people shouting about how he was the last normal Republican and nowhere near as crazy as President Hawley.

(We can already see this sort of thing with the not-dead Bush the Younger.)

Does it get exhausting for y’all, tracking the moral status of every public figure so you can ensure they’re properly categorized in the Evil and Not Evil boxes? Or do you make it easier on yourselves and put them in the boxes first and then decide which of their traits and behaviors are the decisive ones?

You don’t strike me as a guy short of opinions about evil, my friend.

I think they get it. Republican voters and leaders, even anti-trumpers, are “snowflakes” - to use their word - who need to be coddled and told things they want to hear. Republicans, on the whole, are self-emotional-motivated voters and you have to tippy-toe around their feelings.

If they won’t do what is right simply because it is right, well screw them - they can’t be counted on.

EDIT: they are also tribalists who will circle the wagons against both the slightest perceived aggression or most egregious violations.

We aren’t talking about coddling anyone here. Bob Dole’s dead, he didn’t give a fuck. He probably didn’t give a fuck before he died.

We are talking about simply acknowledging that a dude who served his country for longer than any of us have been alive, and literally lost the use of his arm from a German alley shell while fighting literal Nazis, is more than a simplistic caricature created through the lens of modern day partisanship.

This idea that no matter what you do, of you some day so something that I disagree with, such as voting for the wedding guy when you are 95 years old, that nothing else you ever did matters, is terrible. The sum of your existence is simply the worst thing you ever did.

That’s fucking stupid.

Yes, here’s one: We all do it, thinking that it’s good.

They are right. I’m going to stop saying to the Republicans who I know in real life what I type about them on the internet.

They’re not going to vote for our side. They’re not. Why waste time with them?

Yeah. He wa a decent man, I objected more to the “half decent” republican characterization as a bit of whitewashing. He wasn’t always decent enough to put aside politics to do what was right. On the other hand, how many politicians do?

Damn, this kicked off a lot more controversy than I had anticipated.

Did nobody notice in the quote I posted from the article that I replaced every pronoun referring to Bob Dole with Bob Dole?
