I think they get it. Republican voters and leaders, even anti-trumpers, are âsnowflakesâ - to use their word - who need to be coddled and told things they want to hear. Republicans, on the whole, are self-emotional-motivated voters and you have to tippy-toe around their feelings.
If they wonât do what is right simply because it is right, well screw them - they canât be counted on.
EDIT: they are also tribalists who will circle the wagons against both the slightest perceived aggression or most egregious violations.

We are talking about simply acknowledging that a dude who served his country for longer than any of us have been alive, and literally lost the use of his arm from a German alley shell while fighting literal Nazis, is more than a simplistic caricature created through the lens of modern day partisanship.
This idea that no matter what you do, of you some day so something that I disagree with, such as voting for the wedding guy when you are 95 years old, that nothing else you ever did matters, is terrible. The sum of your existence is simply the worst thing you ever did.
