This is where I am.

I voted specifically against the guy when I was a hard-core conservative (voted down ticket GOP the rest of the way to counteract my vote for Clinton). That said he wasn’t in the ballpark of the modern GOP or even the Bush Jr neo-con segment. Maybe near the end he got there, but he was a million years old and so close to death I already considered him dead anyway.

If you look at Dole at the 2016 convention, the guy is a billion years old. The idea that he was some kind of hard core Trumper, or even capable of being one, is nonsense.

Nope, it’s generally trivial. If, say, totally in abstract, you were paid to deny the health effects, going on a stretch here, of the tobacco industry by the point where it was clear, and never even recanted, you’re an evil person, even to a smoker.
It’s usually that easy.

The WWII thing is certainly something I respect but it rains on the just and the unjust alike. Strom Thurmond served bravely in WWII despite being rather old for it and was heavily decorated. LBJ got a commendation for coolness under fire from MacArthur and went on to get us deeper into the Vietnam debacle (just one piece of a truly ambiguous and storied political legacy), etc.

I think, unlike some here, that Trump is genuinely worse than old school GOP but I’m not sure I buy the corollary that guys like Dole or Reagan were swell guys, politically speaking.

Things I wish I could turn back, I can tell you that much. And, yeah, maybe people do too without the opportunity either; I’m not saying to get the torches, just what the perspective is from the outside. And you have actual power, political, economic or just plain influence, it kind of matters. Whether anyone else, personally, thinks other good things override it is their take. There’s no lack of complicated persons who are hard to peg at different ages, and we’d all be blind if every slight was punishable.
