I feel that most of the normal rank and file have proven they prefer power/money to principals. While I might have weighed candidates from both parties before voting: today I can’t see me casting a single vote for any GOP candidate.

The Republican Party apparatus seems to have figured out that the only people that matter are the hardest-core right-wing of the party since they are the ones who vote in primaries. All other rank-and-file Republicans will (generally) dutifully pull the “R” lever when the general election comes, no matter who the candidate is.

There is a downside risk here, that we’ve seen. When the right wing nominates a truly reprehensible candidate they do sometimes lose. But that seems to be a rarity.

The danger, of course, is the Overton Window shifting. They slowly normalize shit behavior until what was “reprehensible” becomes accepted and even desired by those rank-and-file voters.

Exactly. The party sent a strong message when it sidelined the never-Trumpers. Party over morals, party over conscience, party over all. Get on the same page or get out!
