The idea of a Trump/DeSantis ticket would likely unify the GOP and potentially spell disaster for Democrats in 2024. That said, there is no way the two men, or their respective camps/supporters, would be able to get along long enough to make it happen. Trump hates DeSantis for all the attention he’s received recently (Trump hates anyone that is getting more positive press than he is) and I suspect the DeSantis camp thinks the tide is turning against Trump and will try to take advantage of that.

Barring a health setback, Trump is running in the primary for 2024, his ego will demand he do so. If he runs in the primary and loses, there is a sizeable segment of the GOP base that will refuse to vote for anyone else, and that will lead to a GOP loss in 2024. If he wins, much of the GOP will likely rally behind him, or at the very least stay silent, but then the results may be no different than 2020/2022 where the anti-Trump sentiment ends up carrying the day at the polls.

The GOP made their bed in 2016, then proceeded to spend the last 6 years pretty much shitting in it. As long as Trump is around, those sheets aren’t going to get changed.

I think that’s the most likely scenario. I see very little advantage for DeSantis to formally announce early. He already has high name recognition, unlike say Larry Hogan. Larry is going to be blasting Trump, why not wait to see how the Republican react to his attacks?

I think the best case scenario is that Trump just takes his ball and tells his supporters to stay home. That way they won’t be there to vote for downballot republicans like they might if Trump got them out to vote for his own independent party.
