I think, with these words, and his subsequent hints that he didn’t like the effect on the community:
Tom has pretty much indicated which way he leans on this whole “experiment”. I don’t see the point in getting into angry debates over what appears to be a settled question, so I’m going to go silent on this unless Tom specifically requests further feedback. I recommend adopting a similar stance, because really, what’s the point of all the hostility over an argument that’s already been decided upon? Maybe I’m just reading the tea leaves, though, and Tom can indicate that his mind is not yet made up?
That’s very friar-like of you… how suspicious!
I’m no Martin Luther angry Friar. I’m more of a vow of silence type… Shit…
Well, let’s keep in mind that Tom has never been in favor of likes (indeed, being able to turn them off was a basic precondition of the move to Discourse), and when he posted the experiment also indicated he still doesn’t like spoiler tags or avatars, both of which are and will continue to be enabled, and that he didn’t want his distaste for them to be the only deciding factor. He’s also said it’s not going to be a straight vote. So I don’t know that it’s decided, but I also don’t know if debating it further is likely to have any impact. Especially since we sure seem to be retreading the same ground over and over.
I’ll be fine. I like them but I’m not going to throw a fit or anything.
But I MIGHT ironically overuse “you go girl” until even I don’t think it’s funny anymore.
Fwiw, it does bother me. It is a way I like to communicate and interact but people are here telling me that it is dumb, it isn’t communication, and bizarrely, that I am forwarding both some sort of worthless new selfish culture and priming the new destructive advertising machine. So I won’t be allowed to do it and it’s for my own good.

Must. Resist. Space balls. Reference.
You are jumping to conclusions. As has been said, Tom has previously enabled features he himself wasn’t fond of. The experiment runs on.
I hope the debate remains civil, though it feels like most of it has been well covered now.
Personally, I hope we keep the like free status quo. But I don’t really want to keep adding the same points.

One weird trick can get you more likes than you ever thought possible!
You must be running an ad blocker on most sites.
It’s a true to life, like focused, parody of the horrid interstitial adverts we see everywhere.

Doctors hate this one weird trick to improve your health!
It’s called quit Facebook.
Yep. I don’t see any ads, for anything. I don’t even watch the Super Bowl ads. I religiously avoid advertisements of all kinds.
Same with me except I tend to watch the highest rated super bowl ads every year. But every year that list gets shorter.
I love my ad blocker, but I try to give any website I visit a chance before turning it on, since I want to pay them in some fashion for their content, without actually given them money.
But that is a whole different conversation on the morality of ad blocker, and like auto updates, might be a touchy subject for some.
Much less so now that Qt3 doesn’t have ads!
Yeah, I wish it still had ads though. They were usually small and not intrusive, but I felt I was giving something back for the excellent service.
There are still ways you can do that. :)
