Have to work tomorrow. It’s raining. Heard a good song on the radio this afternoon. Fuck it, let’s down a growler this evening.

I did more research into that vodka carb thing. Vodka has no carbs, but how does the alcohol break down?
How does my liver process the alcohol?
There are 2 ways that alcohol can be processed by your liver. Most alcohol is broken down, or metabolised, by an enzyme in your liver cells known as alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). ADH breaks down alcohol into acetaldehyde, and then another enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), rapidly breaks down acetaldehyde into acetate. The acetate is further metabolised, and eventually leaves your body as carbon dioxide and water.

A small amount of alcohol may be processed using a different set of enzymes in your liver. This alternative pathway, known as the ‘microsomal ethanol-oxidising system’ is mainly used when the level of alcohol in your blood is very high. Regular drinking can increase the activity of this second pathway.
So if I gain weight, I can’t blame the alcohol. Curses!
Just picture the classic image of the rock star. Thin as a rail and drinking vodka straight from the bottle.

Well. There is also the cocaine and heroin. Neither of which lend itself to big meals. Coke? Not hungry, too wired. Dope? Not interested in food. Or very much else. Hell, enough dope and you forget to breathe.
I wish that every competitive game had a “drunk ranked” mode where you had to blow above a 0.08 on a little USB breathalyzer to get into it. I’d never play something like League of Legends or Counter Strike sober, but after I’ve had a few, I’d love nothing more than to play some online games poorly with other likewise-inebriated folks.
This is a brilliant idea and you need to get right on it.
The last group I played league with had performances that degraded pretty sharply as the evening went on. You win your first two easy, thirds a struggle, then it’s losses until someone barfs.
“Cait you’re down 6 levels and 200 cs to that Jax. You ok?”
“I can…take ‘em…(hickups)”
Love this site. Love this forum, though I don’t post much. I’ve been a Patreon for years but have never bothered for the label. I hope Tom gets the impact he’s had on so many people, including quiet folks like me. I hope y’all are doing ok. Almost deleted this. Listening to Herbie Hancock.
Glad you didn’t. Don’t be afraid to hit that post button. Whats the worst that could happen? Some silly memes get posted?
A perfect martini (proportions adjusted as I like my martini a bit more gin forward that that 50/50) and I’m off to the races. 3-4oz of High West American Prairie Bourbon later and I’m downright mellow.
A buddy of mine has a martini recipe that involves whispering ‘vermouth’ into the glass.
I’m enjoying a bit of a local distiller’s signature product before bed, a bourbon finished on charred hickory.
So how do you take it? Neat, over ice? I don’t know much about spirits but as I understand it if it’s high quality you don’t use it in a cocktail and instead sip it straight? The good stuff has less of a burn it seems so it’s more suited to sipping.
Depends how snobby the person you are talking to is. I get a lot of side eye from bourbon purists when I order a decent bourbon mixed with cola, but that’s how I like them. There’s no wrong way to appreciate a spirit so never let someone tell you are enjoying things wrong.

My feeling about high end spirits is the same as about steaks. You’re paying for it. If you want it well done with ketchup, so be it. It’s your money, your choice.

Sure, but if you’re mixing it, aren’t you masking the flavors that make it unique (expensive). Drink it however you like, just seems you might as well get a cheap bourbon if you’re mixing.
That’s the received wisdom, broadly speaking, but along with Tortilla and RichVR, I wouldn’t object to someone having it some other way.
This particular whiskey isn’t a great mixer because I’ve heard it described in terms of drinking a campfire. If you like that sort of thing, you usually don’t want to adulterate it. If you don’t, it’s a difficult flavor to mask.
Eh, I can taste the difference. I should add, for the sake of completeness that when I mix a bourbon and cola for myself the ratio is a bit different from what you get from a cocktail at a bar. The bourbon is definitely over 50% of the drink.

I pretty much believe that people who purchase high end spirits are knowledgeable enough to not adulterate them. But OTOH, having money does not equal having good taste. Still, not my problem.
Redemption Rye during my weekly D&D game has me feeling pretty good.
