Nope, just love gin (and rarely drink it anymore because I get stupid).

Judging by the variations you get by just ordering a “martini”, I don’t think there is a right way. If you don’t tell them how you want it, who knows what you will end up with? Wet and dirty, seems to be the closest to the default. I had one place give me a martini on the rocks. Who does that??

The thing is, Mr. Bond was correct. Give the bartender details. He will make it right. Do you think 007 drank speed rack? :)

I once went down a rabbit hole as to whether James Bond drank vodka or gin martinis. Apparently he did both in movies, but the official recipe calls for gin and vodka. A friend made me a Bond (Vesper) Martini years ago, it was wet with the lemon peel, but it was really good. Not sure I would order one, but it was a nice change.

Edit: I prefer stirred.

Takes me back to a discussion with a friend from work that was appalled i put lime in with my hendricks. Cucumber, you idiot, he said.

And you know, he was right.

probably not the time or place i talk about this awesome kamikaze i just made with gin ;)

You’re good people, this is my gin of choice as well.

Oh man… martinis. Yeah, that’s a rabbit hole for sure. Rather than pick a fight (deliberately or not) about what is a “proper” martini, I will instead offer my personal preferences for my palate:

First off, the most contentious question: I use a 3:1 ratio of gin to vermouth as a default. Then depending on the gin I’m using will adjust to somewhere between a 4:1 to 1:1.

I typically use either Plymouth or St. George Botanivore, though I am quite OK with Bombay Sapphire, Aviation, or any number of others, frankly. It’s all about what flavour (we’re talking about gin, so hell yeah I’m putting the “u” in there) profile I’m in the mood for.

  1. Put the glass in the freezer
  2. Add ice to mixer
  3. Add gin and vermouth
  4. Stir (not shake, damnit! fuck those little ice particles) until very cold
  5. Take glass out of freezer
  6. Strain drink into glass
  7. Garnish with a twist of lemon

Periodically I will mix things up a bit and make a “Perfect Martini” and use equal parts sweet and dry vermouth rather than all dry. In which case I use either Carpano Antica or Matthiason vermouth. Note that in this case “Perfect” isn’t a superlative, but rather jargon for “equal parts sweet and dry vermouth” that you sometimes see in other cocktails as well.

One last edit…: Now I’m thirsty. Damnit.

OK, one more edit to make sure my snark didn’t come across wrong. I’m teasing about the ice particles thing. Re-reading it, that sounds way harsher than I meant it to. Sorry about that, Rich!

I have to try that.

No problem, not at all. Drink for pleasure, not for internet points. :)

In honor of good drinking pleasure, I have now made a perfect martini. It is delicious.

I don’t have any sweet Vermouth, alas. OTOH you have me thinking of the ingredients that I do have. And I thank you.

Looks great! My recipe is:

2.5 oz hendrik’s gin, 0.5 oz dolin vermouth, 0.5 carpano antica, lemon twist.

I’m completely find subbing in bombay sapphire. I think I’m more tolerant of vermouth in a martini when it’s sweet.

I read on some site years ago that shaking bruises the gin. I have no idea what that means, but it’s hilarious.

I am the same, I don’t want the ice chips usually. Except on a hot summer day, a martini with a bit of ice chips is very enjoyable. Then again, if I want gin on a hot summer day, I am getting a gin and tonic usually.

Speaking of gin, i just have to get this off my chest: I hate Tanqueray. I swear it only got popular after an ad campaign 10 years ago.

All this talk, I am going to have to get some gin soon. I will have to drive out to the Navy base to avoid paying Washington state’s absurd taxes though.

I’ll drink to that. I hadn’t had a G&T for ages but I’ve been having them occasionally this summer. But I’m a heathen about it and use Costco gin (which is I think more or less Beefeater) and the random Korean tonic water I ordered by the case.

No point in getting good gin in a G&T anyway, unless you down it, it’s going to get watered down anyway.

I didn’t even know Costco had it’s own gin, their private label stuff is usually pretty good though.

I didn’t know Costco did either…

Because Costco in Oregon cant sell liquor per state law. I’d have to drive to Vancouver to get some.

I can confirm that Kirkland’s gin (Costco house brand) is perfectly nice in a G&T or gimlet (with homemade lime cordial). The homemade lemon cordial worked better in a whisky sour with Kirkland Irish whisky.

Oh my. I am not only a bit drunk. But I just had to crack to new laptops. And man, I could only do one. The damn thing allowed me to go to the damn BIOs But then It let me no farther. Can not change Admin PW. Can not change, well, anything. But they gave mw the F10 fuc them. I hav a new idea

But what if…every thread is a drunk thread, because I am always drink? A la…you would not contain me to a single thread would you? (GOSH maybe you would!)
