I actually thought it was the human torch just landing from flight. Right leg extended, right bent slightly, arms akimbo. Whoa. I read too many comics.
Maybe he lit it to draw out the oxygen and suffocate the gopher (though he better have found all of the other entrances). I heard you can do a similar thing with dry ice where you flood the chamber with CO2 instead.
I imagine that if he hadn’t found all the other entrances, he was able to locate them quite easily at that point.
Apparently he had not realized that the gopher had chewed through a gas line when he threw in a smoke bomb to flush out the gopher.
