Looks like he’s holding it against his chest.
Well crap, all this time I thought I was a nerd. Help me out here, the dial is turned to omega, and the readout says FUTILE. Is that where the funny is?
Omega = symbol for electrical resistance (measured in Ohms, which uses the omega symbol).
So, in other words, resistance is futile.

Read it like Yoda, for extra geek laughs.
Futile is resistance.
I was so close! I guess I fail the geek final exam.
It’s cool. There is a makeup test in the cafeteria at 3. I’m sure you’ll get your geek badge.

But Jerry is supposed to fight Buddy at Three O’Clock!!
Except that he would say: “Futile resistance is”, wouldn’t he?
Guess Tim’s joining me in the cafeteria at 3.
Damn. I guess we all know where I’ll be at 3!

The day that I had to build my own DVOM resistance wasn’t futile. It was hard as hell to find though.

The rarely seen Three O’Clock High reference. I applaud you, sir.
I liked the visual joke, but the caption kind of ruins it for me.
Well, I don’t really see how, being the caption doesn’t give away or explain the joke, but since you had a hand in the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise, which I adore, here you go:
It’s a combination of “THIS IS A JOKE” and pointing out the obvious - that understanding the joke requires some knowledge slightly outside the everyday. It’s a variant on overexplaining the joke, in the sense that “this is nerdy” is part of the joke, so we don’t need to be told that again to get that it’s nerdy.
Imagine if I’d slapped “FUNNY WEDDING INVITATION” on that image I posted upthread (which is real, btw, I snagged that from a news story). It doesn’t really explain the joke, but it’s surely unwelcome.
