In all seriousness, NASA did confirm that it is a frog. They said that the area on the rocket is kept wet so sometimes frogs sneak in. They claim that the fate of the frog is “uncertain” (yeah right).

What’s the source of those? It’s one of those images that just screams ‘fake’, given the heavy compression and artifacts. Particularly given the comparatively high resolution.

The images were a bit bigger than the snapshots I originally saw, so I imagine they were reduced for effect. Because this is a live-weapon demonstration, this would have been taken on a high zoom and potentially these are actually video stills rather than individual shots, from a digital SLR.
