The Last Ship

Episode Two was a complete LOL Fest. Satellites crashing to the Earth (no mention of exactly how this was accomplished, or why we simply couldn’t retask to commercial or allied satellites), sinking another ship with a fixed gun emplacement on your moving ship across miles of ocean, and the best part, the bridge that is suddenly somehow the only route for the entire Grand Columbian Army to advance into Panama and on to North America (good thing our intrepid foursome of operators is in the area!).

It’s like watching a Tom Clancy novel written by a 12-year-old addicted to Call of Duty.

Each episode just keeps getting more ridiculous, and the writing and acting are actually getting worse. Now we have the obligatory all-female Huey crew that went full-on “'Murica!” on three attack planes with what were apparently guided or heat seeking missiles launched from a Vietnam-era helicopter? And that bridge scene with the Columbian colonel and the tanker truck…wow…

I’m basically stuck watching this for the rest of the season because it’s the final season and I’ve stuck around this long, so I may as well see how it all ends. That said, I can’t ever remember a TV show that has seen such noticeable drop-offs in quality between each and every season. Last Ship has gone from being an interesting if somewhat “rah-rah” blockbustery summer series to being basically a live-action cartoon.

You mean to say, episodes are getting more fantastic every week! ;)

I am a few episodes behind, I just watched a bridge get blown up. Overall it’s still a fun show, wish it would have been on in the summer when I had more free time.

Anyone else still subjecting themselves to this every week? This past Sunday was probably the most ridiculous episode in the history of the series, featuring a full on assault of what is supposedly the central command center for all military operations, which is apparently protected by about 5 security guards armed with pistols. I also enjoyed how they took pains to make sure we all realized that Admiral Chandler would be lost if he deployed the torpedo inside the blast radius…which of course he did…and then showed up onboard ship again unscathed with zero explanation.

I also can’t help but notice that the “bad guys” this season are Central/South American. Seems awfully suspicious given the current political climate and how Rah-Rah 'Murica the show is in general. I mean, sure, they made a little effort to portray Cuba and Mexico as allying themselves with the U.S., but come on…it’s a pretty transparent Latin Socialist/Fascist Boogeyman versus the United States of Kick Ass plotline.

Seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back to back in late 2016 early 2017 so I doubt it was intentional with our current day political climate, but who knows.

I didn’t see this weeks episode yet. Still its fun to watch to some degree, I like how the one guy assaulted a tank last week with just nades and his assault rifle, sprayed insite the open top hatch and then hopped in the tank and it appeared to be empty and undamaged , then used it on the enemy base. Cuz thats how it works!

LOL. Yeah, that’s how we do it all the time in video games, so it totally checks out. =)

You are right, the action scenes are starting to turn into newer Call of Duty parodies!

Well that is it for the Nathan James. This had to be the most action packed season of the series. Sorta sad they didn’t give it a better ending, I would have liked 1 more episode with a happy ever after type of recap.

I never noticed but this was based on the book by William Brinkley. Anyone read it? Worth the read or audio edition?

Yeah, while the beach landing scenes were pretty awesome, the final moments of the Nathan James were just ROFLCOPTER bad.
“Captain, we’ve lost all weapons control and propulsion and navigation systems are down!”
“That’s it, I’m calling the Abandon Ship.”
5 Minutes Later
“So if I just tie this rope to the ceiling and around the wheel, then kick it into speed boat mode…”
KAPLOW!!!
(um, WTF happened to no propulsion/navigation?)

Also, why the hell would the other ship have not continued to fire, finishing off the James? Instead their supposedly experience captain and crew allow their ship to go broadsides versus the bow of the Nathan James? Please.

It was a fun summer show for a couple of seasons, but I’m honestly kind of glad it’s done. The last two seasons just got more and more outrageous with each episode, and the writing went from “pretty bad” to “these people should never work on scripts again”.

Kane also revealed the reason the finale’s incredibly realistic-looking amphibious landing sequence ended up being so effective: It wasn’t done using VFX props on a set; rather, it was done — at no extra cost to the show (or taxpayers) — by actual U.S. Marines, who offered to let the crew shoot during a scheduled live drill.

It was written a long time ago (early 90s), and I did read it. It’s a much more bleak and “realistic” novel. The scenario is WW3 happened and the crew of a Navy destroyer is basically trying to figure out how to survive. All the major nations were wiped out and radiation is everywhere.

It’s all sorts of “how to we rebuild society?” thought experiment when males outnumber females by like 10-1.

In other words, it makes the World War Z adaptation look incredibly faithful to its source material in comparison (and WWZ barely resembled the book).

That’s cool. I wondered about the beach scenes, as it was obvious those were real vehicles and not just effects, especially when the hovercraft came in later to drop off all the vehicles. I figured the Navy/Marines must have some kind of partnership with the show, but it’s even cooler how it seems like it came together organically like that. I bet the Marines involved had a complete blast (no pun intended).

The whole show seemed like a thinly veiled recruiting tool, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I do like that throughout all the seasons it seemed like a lot of care was taken to make the ship systems as realistic as possible, as well as much of the equipment they used and protocols that they followed. It definitely portrayed service in the Navy and Marines in a very positive and respectful way, which was nice. I even liked the vast majority of the actors involved in the show…if only the writing had been better this could have been a killer show. Instead it was just a guilty summer pleasure.

I found this on Hulu and thought the pandemic premise made it worth checking out. Holy cow, is there a lot of stupid! So much macho patriotic-military-can-do and dumb plot points and international stereotypes. I pretty much laughed out loud when they hit Gitmo and found freed terrorists, and then in the very next episode you’ve got a genius Russian captain practically twirling his mustache and stroking a white cat. Talk about writing to the lowest common denominator.

Having said all that, it’s still dumb fun. Good for the old “nice to have something on in the background that I can half-watch while doing chores”.
