And the trial would likely be underway, if not over, but for all his shenanigans meant to delay past the election rather than mount a good-faith defense. (Although John Roberts did end up sodomizing the Constitution for him, so yeah.)
In the NY hush money case, Trump apparently filed an appeal with the 2nd circuit court of appeals yesterday. I can’t find the filing, but he’s asking to have the case removed to federal court because of presidential immunity, and he’s asking for an administrative stay of his sentencing date (which is on the 18th) while the appeal is being considered.
Apparently the appeal includes correspondence that says Judge Merchan will decide today whether to postpone sentencing until after the election.
As far as I know, it’s not specifically Ecuadorian. It’s one of several ways I learned to say something like you’re welcome, and I liked it better than the abrupt (to me) ‘de nada’.
Tl;dr: while the prosecution said they were neutral on moving the date, their responses and filings basically made the same arguments for moving the date that the defense made. If both sides think I should move the date to avoid the appearance of political motivation, I’ll move the date.
The only positive - I guess, since I read it - is that Dump won’t be able to fundraise off this and act like the martyr. It feels like we’re living in a banana republic.
What happens if the President-Elect is in prison? Can they get work release to attend the inauguration? If they cannot attend the inauguration, are they President?
(not that any of those things will happen - just bored speculation)
I mean we all know all cases vanish if he wins. Honestly with how broken we are I don’t see him getting sentenced doing anything but motivate his voters. I took the day after the election off. I’m not watching jack the day as I can’t mentally take watching this shitshow.
I see some people pointing out that, by postponing sentencing, Merchan probably prevents SCOTUS from weighing in on the case until sometime after the election. Maybe not nothing, maybe making lemonade.
“This matter is one that stands alone, in a unique place in this Nation’s history,” the judge wrote.
If Trump is sentenced, then the public deserves “a sentencing hearing that is entirely focused on the verdict of the jury,” and one that is “free from distraction or distortion.”
“Unfortunately, we are now at a place in time that is fraught with complexities rendering the requirements of a sentencing hearing, should one be necessary, difficult to execute,” Merchan wrote.
“I don’t want to appear biased, so I will give a huge gift to Trump” is how the media got Trump elected in 2016, and how the courts are going to get him elected this year.
