Fortunately I am doing a short term AirBNB rental at a fully furnished apartment until I find something more permanent, so the moving truck won’t be joining me at least for another month.

Snow started falling in earnest here in NoVa about a half hour back.
One of our family traditions since the big storm back in 2003 is to deploy the “snow stick” to track the height of the fall. Sadly, the traditional snow stick (just a 2x4 that my then-six daughter marked up) was lost last year, so my 14-year-old (different daughter) made a new one that I have staked out in the front yard. It’s very avaunt guarde.
My plan is to mount my GoPro in the front window and do a time-lapse thing over the next 30 hours or so. In the meantime I’ll post some status pictures until I get too drunk.

And ice is beginning to seriously mount here (an altogether different problem than what you DC folks are facing, but hey, I want to join in the fun :P). Our parking lot’s gone from dark grey to frosty silver over the last few hours, and while there’ve been some intermittent flurries layering onto stuff, most of that is just straight ice. With new forecasts putting things not cracking 32F until sometime on Sunday, if/when power lines start going down, I think there’s gonna be a lot of very cold people in central NC.

Very cool snow stick, kudos to the kid! Flurries didn’t last long here, it’s full on snowing now. The Mrs and my oldest daughter picked up some Chik-fil-a on the way home from work, score! Now to tuck in and see how this shapes up.

You need a proper snowboard to take good measurements though. Just any flat white board will do- grass is not accurate for measuring.
Right now this is a splendid little snow storm.
But that big, mean ol’ SLP is coming up from the south and it’s going to make the snow come dumping out and it’s going to kick up some pretty furious winds.
The ultra-accurate Snow Stick MkII says about 4" so far. About an inch an hour.

One thing to keep in mind is that snow will compress, so your readings will probably be less than the official count (they clear it away periodically).
