I’m hoping in 3-4 hours that I might hear a peep from her. When she last checked in, she said it might cause a problem with her flying out but not hit her actual island. It kind of looks to me like it went south a bit since then.

Check out the FlowX weather app for Android. it’s lightweight, basically just a single weather map, and easy to use.

She’s basically a hydromancer. And, yeah… that is pretty tremendous.
It’s an eye-catching visualization, but since she is trying to convince people of the actual potential danger of flooding, maybe she should have chosen a more representative scenario. The people who need to think about the danger are probably not those who live with their house and car already at sea level, but the ones upstream. Actual flood modelling is hard.

Well, they could have thrown her into a wave pool filled with cars and sewage… but, you know, that’s how you kill weather people.

Also sounds like a Japanese game show.
The BBC shows up with poverty maps as a unique way to kick us while we are down.

Ugh. This is where two of my aunts live, and it’s only getting started there.
That weather report with the virtual flood. Holy shirtballs.
The picture and videos I’ve seen from Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach (just a few miles away) are pretty grim. The news this morning reported that the Cape Fear river is up past its flood stage and is expected to exceed the record set by hurricane Floyd previously… and then they expect it to sit at that level for a couple days as everything drains through the basin.
I haven’t shared this with my daughter or the other college kids staying with us, but I have my doubts about them returning to school at UNCW this semester. The university isn’t too close to the river, but I expect the incidental flooding and overall damage to the city may be enough for them to close until the spring.
In the meantime, I am living in a sorority house. Not one of those sexy versions where 20-somethings are running around in lingerie having pillow fights, but the type where there is never any hot water and the pipes are getting clogged with sanitary napkins.

If that’s the case, other schools might accept them for the rest of the semester, as happened with Katrina.
There’s zero news coming out of Beaufort, which concerns me. My parents’ elderly neighbors stayed at their home and it looks like Beaufort, Harkers Island, and the general Cape Lookout region took the brunt of the winds last night. I was up worried about them (and my parents’ house) most of the night.
Not looking so great in New Bern:

Driving home north on I-95 from New Jersey yesterday, I passed at least 4 convoys of utility trucks from CT and MA heading south. I hope power outages are the least of everyone’s trouble down there for the next few days, but the utility has proactively called in the cavalry. Seems right…a crew from North Carolina restored my home’s power after Sandy.

I heard from my sister today, in the Philippines, before she went to bed. She said that horrific typhoon is not hitting her island and is not expected to. She still has concerns that flight home might be an issue.
It’s pretty nuts how much stronger typhoons get then our Hurricanes.
Keep losing power. I don’t think my desktop likes it. Last time it came back up, there was no text on any explorer windows (e.g. filenames, right click menus, window titles, etc.).
Thinking I should probably keep it off…
