Dear lord, that looks pretty terrifying. Are your in-laws okay?

They are. We’re not in direct communication due to no power; but have assurances from a neighbor. We’ll know more tomorrow.

Of course, the island is cut in two and airport and ports under water so food is going to be a concern over the next few weeks. Several of the outlying cays (keys) have been hit hard; houses simply gone.

Even more horrific is the shantytowns near Marsh Harbor have been scoured off the face of the earth. Mostly Haitian migrant workers, a Bahamian underclass. It’s going to be super ugly.

This storm has set all sorts of records already even if it never makes it to the US coast.

Dorian basically parked over the Bahamas, moving a 1-2 mph over the last 12-18 hours. That’s terrible news for the folks living there, as flooding and wind damage are going to be extreme there.

It’s slightly better news for the US mainland right now, as the storm is losing some organization and is now “just” a category 4.

Folks in the Bahamas have now been in a similar condition to an actual tornado, for 24 hours straight.

Per the Tropical Tidbits guy, who has been great, the lack of motion means that when Dorian turns north it will start further east, reducing the chance it makes landfall in Florida.

The Bahamas are the sacrificial offering for Florida. We should probably throw a couple billion their way.

Yep, Dorian definitely emptied both barrels over Grand Bahama and Abacos.

Florida still will likely get some tropical storm level activity along the coast, as will the Carolinas, but compared to where things stood 24-36 hours ago, the southeast US is breathing a bit easier.

I thought this was a great illustration of just what Grand Bahama has been up against:

Worth clicking the link in the tweet for a GIF of the 24 hour satellite activity. Storm just stopped and dumped.

The damn thing still hasn’t moved.

Has several videos along the left hand side …

Just complete devastation.

Holy fuck

Yikes. I fear the death toll is going to be catastrophic.

There is nothing left there.

That’s pretty horrific.

It’s down to a Cat 2, with gaps in the eyewall showing up. Both good news and bad news.

The good news is an obvious reduction in wind force.

The bad news is that yeah, the storm still isn’t moving much…and the compact nature of Dorian is now spreading out, with wide rain/wind bands lashing the Florida coast, as the storm spreads out and covers more area.

The company estimates that, in the wider view below, more than 60% of the Grand Bahama island shown is submerged.

That is absolutely unbelievable. You have to wonder how long it takes for them to rebuild, there is nothing left.

Has a hurricane ever stayed in 1 spot for 24 hours before?

The one over Houston a couple of years ago comes to mind.

Saw Stu Ostro state that Grand Bahama has now endured hurricane force winds for longer than any place that they’re aware of over a 24 hour period.

I don’t think Harvy stayed in one spot as a Hurricane though. This stayed at one spot as a category 5 for over a half a day, and a category 4 for over 24h I believe.
