That’s an uh oh…

That said, the National Hurricane Center’s latest rain fall projections (from 15 minutes ago) show the heaviest rains now moving offshore.

Yes, part of that is “The Mudd” which is the shantytown I mentioned upthread. I doubt they’ll ever have an accurate death count due to the undocumented nature of many of the residents. Preliminary reports are 13k houses destroyed in Marsh Harbor alone. Who knows what flood damage is going to be. This is also where the big docks and airport are which is going to complicate recovery efforts. Most of the stores, warehouses, and etc were also in MH.

Most of the cays (1% retirement homes) were trashed, though little loss of life due to much better construction and general preparedness.
Grand Bahama (Freeport) is going to be similar, which is the second largest city in the Bahamas (Marsh Harbor was third largest).

Royal Bahamian Defense Force overflight:

Another flyover:

Satellite imagery showing extent of flooding in both Abaco and Grand Bahama:

I saw that number the other day so I looked this up again. That was for all of the Bahamas. If you look at Marsh Harbor on Google Maps, I doubt there’s even 1300 homes there. A lot of the flooded land mass doesn’t appear to be populated either – clearly for good reason.

It’s still a massive humanitarian crisis so I don’t mean to be pedantic about it. Just a reminder that details on the Internet can be misleading.

Not sure where the 13k figure came from tbh. Total population of the island (includng cays) is around 25k. There’s been a lot of construction since the last census, much of it in the cays. Mudd and Pigeon Peas (the shantytowns) had some thousands of shacks. Maybe they’re claiming “structures”, not just houses. One thing is for sure, they haven’t done anything close to a scientific survey; that’s not generally within the capability of the Bahamian government during the best of times. Grand Bahama (Freeport) has a higher density but info is still sketchy due to continued winds.

On one of the aerial pictures of MH there’s a picture of the main drag and the only building with a roof on it is our local attorneys office (we own a unimproved lot in Cassaurina).

Hurricane Harvey, while not literally stationary, effectively stayed in one relatively small area while dumping torrential amounts of rain on Southeastern Texas for multiple days to the tune of $125 billion of damage and over 100 lives lost.

We need to do something to get rid of these hurricanes once and for all so that Texans can live in peace.

Dorian back to Category 3, and looks to be headed straight up the coasts of the Carolinas, with a pretty hard swipe on coastal Georgia along the way.

Well, my stubborn parents are going to take a direct hit. They’re behind a small barrier island that usually diverts storm surge to the nearby rivers, so here’s hoping all goes well. I’m pretty sure their town will be under water. Last time, their whole-house generator exploded in a giant fireball when a tree fell on it, forcing the fire dept to come out in the middle of the worst of the hurricane. :(

This is the tide gauge near my parents. High tide there if very soon so it looks like the storm is likely to hit in force at low tide, which is awesome for that area. The folks further up the nearby rivers were heavily flooded with Michael last year.

Looks like Emerald Isle, NC was hit by tornados already:

Why do tornadoes always hit RV parks?

Because god hates them.

Ugh… eyewall has been slowly passing over my parents for hours. There are so many people there who have recovered from Matthew, Florence, or Michael yet. Eastern N.C. is going to be fucked for years to come.

Likely will never get unfucked until everyone starts building homes out of concrete.

Or like this, to reduce wind resistance.

I was just thinking that concrete/wind proof construction won’t protect you from flooding however.

Check out the video, they can build them 20 feet high. Obviously not senior citizen friendly at that level.
