I guess you have to also factor in sea levels rising due to global warming, not just storm surges.

Or, you know, stop rebuilding in the same place every time you get fvcked by a hurricane.

It’s not so simple here, considering it is illegal to discuss climate science during real estate deals.
My dad owns a beach house on Topsail beach, NC. Him and my step mom were trying to sell it last year but it didn’t sell in time. Then Matthew hit and did a lot of damage to the houses. My step mom was on top of everything and managed to nail down contractors to fix the place up and just got everything in great shape about 2-3 months ago (there are still a lot of houses that haven’t gotten fully repaired yet). They put the house on the market but a few weeks ago one buyer was interested in it but his financing fell through, and another fell through for some other reason.
I’m sure the house is fine, as far as I can tell they didn’t get wind gusts above 50mph and their new roof and windows are cat 3 rated. That being said I’m sure the real estate market is going to cool off a bit due to 2 decent hurricanes in 2 years.

This is the biggest problem in eastern NC right now. It’s damn near impossible to find a plumber, electrician, or other contractor to work on your damaged house. They’re all booked pretty much indefinitely. My parents have been trying to find somebody to replace an attic fan for months, but nobody will even return their calls.

I can only imagine. It was almost impossible for me to find any tradespeople when I was finishing my basement, I had to rely on personal contacts and calling in favors. And this is all due to a long-running housing boom in Utah, not anything like rebuilding from hurricanes. That must be awful.

That sucks. I know NJ companies sent workers south to help, but I believe it’s a utility company meant to bring things back up not really… long-term individual house assistance. It’s hard to get that kind of help even in none damaged areas. It just seems like we need more people in these fields, in general.
Correct, skilled trades(people) have been in decline for well over a decade due to retirement and lack of new apprentices. The push to send everyone to college over the last 20+ years has caused a severe shortage of these workers now.
Mike Rowe has pretty much hammered this issue weekly for the last decade.
Yeah we have had our rental house empty for a month now waiting for contractors to do some repairs we need to do. It’s taken them forever just to get us quotes. We want to throw money at someone but no one wants to take it (and I’m not trying to do it on the cheap because getting it done sooner saves me more money then trying to be cheap).

Offline is accurate but inadequate for this.

You literally get to watch the house start doing a Wizard of Oz. That’s crazy.
It’s weird that that automatic linked thing says CNN when it links to a story on msn.com.
Oh and yeah, the images of his home being lifted off the ground… wow, scary. Would have been interesting to see an “after” picture.

MSN basically just gathers a bunch of news stories from other sources and puts them in one place. That’s why I think it’s weird when someone says something like… well they get their news from MSN. Well sorrt of, but MSN just pools it and the news sources are a variety of places. I find it easier to use MSN on PC and Google News on Android devices. They both source the original content although Google takes you to the sources actual page.
I did not know that, thanks for the explanation.

It wasn’t always like that. MSN used to be MSNBC or at least linked to MSNBC and then they broke up or something.
Also… CNN’s direct website really sucks.

Pretty much everything about CNN sucks.

This is the new norm, dude. We’re gonna see hurricanes like this every year now, forever.
And eventually the flood waters will simply not go away. For instance in the Bahamas.

Yeah, I was wondering the other day if some of that land that flooded is now permanently underwater.

You can’t just go changing your avatar after all this time, dude.
