Yeah it definitely right on the cusp. Should be fun tomorrow morning.

Hey! That’s my coat. Mine’s black, and a much larger size. It’s also 10 years old and still going strong.

And @Nesrie, the model would not get frostbite on her nose wearing the parka properly. With the fur trimmed hood fully zipped closed, it creates a lengthy tunnel that is kept naturally warm by your breath and venting head heat. I usually remove my fur trim (it zips off) since I’m not particularly proud that I bought something with real fur, but it really helps to narrow the hood opening as well. The fur is coyote, and they’re trapped as part of culling for control of overpopulation, but it still makes me feel kinda bad. I only zip it back on when it’s -20C or colder outside.

Best coat I’ve ever purchased, and paired with a good pair of snow pants, I can handle anything short of the Arctic.

I didn’t even realize that was real fur. I am so used to it all being fake, it didn’t even occur to me to think otherwise. Good to know about the closure of the hood. Clearly I have never spent much time in deep cold.

The fur trim (real or fake) creates turbulence at the opening of the hood and disrupts the air flow, keeping a pocket of warm air around the face.

So after the snow the other day up here in the Great American North East, I decided to go for a quick stroll through the neighborhood. The sun was setting and the sky turned a very pleasant pink to orange to purple. I took a few quick snaps on my phone.

Woo snow! I guess we don’t really get snow days these days, but still. Woo snow!

Everyone all like woo snow, till they get lots of snow, and then it snows 7 out of the 12 days in February. And then they want more snow and ice for 4 of the next 7 days. Then you hate snow. :)

I hate snow even if we only get an inch or so, at least in the before times, because it makes my commute miserable. My hour long commute has more than doubled in the last couple of years due to snow.

I love snow when I don’t have to go anywhere. It looks like this storm will be perfect. Hit Saturday and warm up again on Tuesday (Monday being a holiday).

So the snowpocalypse is very unevenly distributed. My wife’s boss sent a picture of his house, from Vancouver, WA, with almost 13” of snow. Her office which is about 10 miles straight east of me got 3-4”.

Our house?

Icy as all hell though

That’s more than enough to scare you average Portland commuter though.

Commuters should be scared of those icy conditions, regardless of where they live. I say this as someone who routinely shakes his fist at people flying by at high speeds on ice because they think four-wheel drive is somehow makes them impervious. :)

Was watching the news last night. There was a huge pile up of cars and trucks. Along came a semi that just plowed into and over the mass of twisted metal. And behind that, in another lane I guess, zipped cars going way too fast. I know that trucks can’t stop on a dime. But that truck should have been going slower. The cars too. What the fuck is wrong with people?

I saw that clip, last I read 6 people had died. I don’t know what the death toll ended up being, but that was brutal.

God damn thank you. As a Florida man I didn’t feel comfortable saying anything but I don’t really see how “only a half inch of ice” shouldn’t make people drive much slower. Ice is ice and macho drive fast bullshit needs to stop. Drive safely all the time, that’s the manly and difficult thing to do. Any stupid kid can vroom go fast, even in a Corolla.

Problem is it’s not just some meathead dudes out there thinking ‘ppfftt ice, I can drive on this no problem’ it’s everyone.

I had a woman in a big suv try to overtake me on an icy country road just 2 days ago, with a child in the back seat and on a long bend. She lost traction as she tried to accelerate past me and began to fish tail, of course a car comes around the bend on the other side and has to slam on and almost slide into the ditch. Luckily the car in the opposite lane was going nice and slow. Idiot suv then regains control and gets back in the correct lane (now in front of me as I had stopped to try and make room/not get hit) and zipps off like nothing happened. Mind boggling.

Nice photos, JH!

Here are a couple of sunset shots I took the other day, plus Leonard the little snow guy my daughter made.

Completely agreed. Everyone does it now. As with most things, being responsible is the more difficult decision, so you see a lot more people doing the stupid thing.

I was sort of addressing an attitude I’ve seen in threads here when we discuss driving that some members have that no one drives fast enough and they are cool and you should move out of their way. Luckily it’s relatively rare here.

Agreed. Ice is a hell of a lot worse than snow. Snow with chains is pretty easy. Inexperienced drivers, drivers in a hurry and idiots in 4x4s always under estimate ice.

I mean growing up in the midwest I know a thing or two about icy roads. I would routinely wish people would wind up in a ditch when driving like assholes in snow, simply because if they did they would present less danger to others.

And I would actually rather have the deeper snow that places a few miles away got. The roads are crazy icy by me, and made my morning run rather interesting. I nearly had to come to a stop to turn a corner. I have no intention of driving right now if I can help it.

A few inches of snow is actually better to drive on, and gives better traction. And a foot+ of snow will keep most people off the roads.

Hey, it’s cold out in these parts. Mother 'effin weather.
