I was asking the wife about cooling centers. She’s originally from Everett. She said, I don’t know. They were never needed before.

If you are in the Pacific NW, and do not have access to AC - you should consider this heat wave like its an incoming hurricane. As in find a place to shelter, or travel to somewhere out of its way - as it could kill you.

The wet bulb temperatures across the region will be in the high 80s - just a few degrees below the mark where a healthy human body can no longer shed heat and is inevitably fatal.

Even in a kiddie pool.

For anyone with a health condition, the entire region will be above the wet bulb threshold (79F) where it could be fatal.

I would take this weather VERY seriously - thousands of people could die in this, particularly those who are unprepared.

Trying to beat the heat and did my walk at 6:30 this morning. Still disturbingly warm, and the morning sun was more intense than normal. Today the full heat starts to arrive, and you can tell it’s going to be brutal.

Yea, sorry about stealing all the nice weather - that pale blue bubble over western Texas and New Mexico means this summer has been the coolest in memory. We’re only predicted to be over 90d for one or two days for the whole of next week.

I guess you guys get to experience Texas for a month or two this year :/

These things are becoming are common as climate change has slowed the jetstream down, leading to more Rex and Omega blocking patterns, which lead to these sustained weather patterns.

I’m worried about food supply this winter, and that triggering something globally now. We’re going to lose a lot of crops to drought+heat (and this is hitting Mexican and Canadian agriculture as well)

It’s supposed to be 115 in Portland tomorrow. WTF?

I did a bike ride at 5:30 and it was beautiful out. Then I went for a walk at 8ish and it was brutal. It was only 80, but it did feel hotter than that. No breeze at all, so that didn’t help.

Locked up in the bedroom with AC. One cat is smart and hanging with me. The other thinks she’s a black panther and was just laying in the sun. She finally moved inside, but she has no interest in being in the one cool room in the house.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Fuck me this is nasty. My morning run I was soaked and drained more than normal, because it was already 90 when I finished at 10am

Yeah, same. The intensity of the heat was much higher than the posted temps. Mostly because the usual breeze we’d have at that time of day was gone, and the humidity is much higher than normal for this time of year.

Almost as odd in that forecast is the temperature difference from the low to the high - that’s a fifty degree swing in one day. We just don’t get that kind of variation out here. This is like some kind of crazy alien terraforming shit right here.

Thankfully it’s still cooling down at night.

Hell is when the temps don’t drop at night. That’s when lots of people start to die.

Seriously, though, last time I was this hot was when I was in the tropics.

Also, close your curtains and drapes and shades! Especially those exposed toward the sun!

Plus, my wife’s and my bedroom is converted attic space so, yeah. Abandoning that room with quickness.

As a person in the South, thank the divine Cthulhu that your humidity isn’t even higher than that. I cannot even imagine where you guys would be in that situation.

I was amazed to hear the percentage of people without AC in that area:

A PEMCO Insurance survey in 2015 showed 59 percent of Washington and Oregon residents live without air conditioning.

Of the 39 percent who have central air, only 51 percent of that group say they use it regularly, according to the survey.

And, no surprise, homes in Oregon are more likely to have air conditioning than in Washington: 46 percent and 32 percent, respectively.

38% doesn’t even count as humid , does it?

Not even remotely, no

95% of the year we just don’t need it. The other 5%, we just kinda suck it up. Or go for long drives. Or something.

Not really. But the humidity has been dropping heavily as it warms up (I mean that’s just science, the same amount of water in a given volume of air will be lower humidity % at higher temperature). It was over 50% when I got up this morning and started my run.

Normally when we are in the 90’s+ the humidity range is closer to 20-25%, we get really dry in the summer.

So we’re wine tasting this weekend, this is what it’s like where we are.

This is what it’s like at home, where the cats are.

I can’t wait to go home tomorrow. I don’t do well with heat.

It’s cooling down, but not enough. My weather station says the low was 72° this morning. Which means my condo never got below 76°. Kept the windows closed and the blinds closed and it’s sticking at 82° inside.

It seems awesome there in Torrance.

This was Lake Norman, yesterday. High of around 80F, highest humidity about 58%. This was damn near a perfect boating day. Partly cloudy days can usually hold the temps down just a bit. Being a Friday afternoon vs. the weekend meant it was less choppy from traffic as well.
