I’m about 15 minutes east down the highway from the top of the pass and the ski resort. Now that I’m dug out hopefully I’ll get up there one of these mornings. On the mountain they reported 48"-54" fell during the storm.

Ok, so I was traveling in Utah this past week, and driving around in this blizzard.
Then, to try and get ahead of it as it moved east, I took a red eye back to the northeast last night.
I did successfully land before the storm got here… Just barely. So my flights weren’t cancelled, but I was then treated to driving 250 miles, through a blizzard, which I had already driven though a day prior in Utah.
I feel like Thorin entering lake town.

And you didn’t even stop to say hi? I woulda bought you the finest sparkling cider the state has to offer! ;)
Seriously, though, the past few winters have had very little in the way of snow so that’s really unfortunate timing for you to be going through the state!

Heh, sorry, wasn’t a social call. I was out at Hill for the last 6 days straight.
In terms of snow, I think you guys need all you can get, right? I was under the impression you were in pretty hard core drought conditions.
Also, one thing that I hadn’t really expected about the Salt Lake area, is that you guys have some pretty decent food, from a bunch of different cuisines. I don’t know why, but I expected blander food.

Oh yeah, I can’t overstate how desperately the water is needed. My lawn is entirely dead after this past year’s water restrictions in my county (I’m about 15 miles south of Hill AFB). The Great Salt Lake is at it’s lowest level in recorded history and Lake Powell is so low the dam may not be able to generate electricity for much longer. This year we’ve gotten off to a good start in terms of snowpack and that’s the first time in a while. We’ll need several years of this to break the drought, but we’ll take what we can get.
It’s come a ways in the past 20 years or so. If you were here in the 90s it probably would be have been closer to your expectations.

When I was out there earlier in the year working, I drove out onto one of those islands in Salt Lake, and, frankly, the lake was depressing. Seemed (and smelled) less like a lake and more like a bay at low tide.

Depressing for sure. I grew up with a view overlooking the lake and it used to be just that, a lake with Antelope Island (the one you likely drove out to) out a ways. It’s not even an island anymore, it’s basically a peninsula. That same view now just overlooks a salt flat.
Antelope is in the SE corner of the lake, west of Farmington and Layton.
That’s a nice view from your balcony. What part of London is that?
Deptford looking toward Greenwich
I used to audit a company in Deptford. They provided props for movies including many modern and antique firearms so they always had to have a police escort. The warehouse itself had barbed wire all the way around which is rare in London.
Pretty massive winter storm incoming to the midwest and northeast around Christmas. Which – yeah, I know, it’s December, duh. But still, here’s some stuff to know on a heavy travel holiday.

Models are still all over the place on snowfall totals, but if you’re in a vector running from roughly Chicago in the north to St. Louis in the south and going west and a bit north from there and east and up into Indiana, Ohio, western PA, NY, and New England, expect potential substantial snowfall from Wednesday night (upper mountain west) to Thursday (St. Louis, most of Iowa, and Illinois) to Friday and Saturday (points east of there). Model runs showing anywhere from 6" to 20", and that’s not all…

This particular storm is going to be accompanied by a polar vortex, for added fun. For those getting snow, good luck removing it expeditiously – the high temperature on Friday in STL will be 5 degrees. Chicago will actually be a little warmer than that. But consider that normal chemical pre-treatments on major roads tend to lose efficacy below 20 degrees fahrenheit, and yeah.

Live in the path of this storm? Expecting to travel? Yeah, that might be pretty tough. Expecting Amazon/UPS/FedEx, USPS to deliver packages in the teeth of that thing on Friday/Saturday before Christmas? Probably not happening.
The worst part of this storm, to me, is going to be 40-50 mph wind gusts that will knock out a lot of power in its path along with the accompanying dangerously cold temperatures. Plan your week accordingly.
Here in Southwest Ohio the forecast is bipolar. On Wednesday it will be in the high 40’s. Thursday night it dips down to 6 degrees, with rain turning to freezing rain turning to snow overnight, and a little more snow possible on Friday when winds will be up to 50mph and the wind chill in the negative teens. Then by the middle of next week highs return to the upper 40’s and low 50’s. Go home Winter, you’re drunk.
My office will close at noon on Friday for the holiday, so myself and pretty much everyone else here has already announced they are taking the whole day off because who the hell wants to attempt to drive into work through ice, snow and wind chills in the negatives just to turn around and slog back through it again 4 hours later?
Sounds pretty similar to here in the Lou. 45 on Wednesday getting close to 50 Thursday morning…and then 5-10 degrees by Thursday late night, and snow. 5 degrees the high on Friday, and then up to the mid-40s during holiday week.
Canceled family Christmas for the third consecutive year.
Mother Nature’s War on Christmas!
Yeah, that’s me. Fortunately I’m heading southeast, Michigan to Florida, and leaving early Thursday morning. So I should be staying just ahead of the worst of it (knock on wood), although my planned stop in Chattanooga TN on Thursday night will be interesting. It’s supposed to go from a high of 50 on Thursday to 19 (!) on Friday. I’ll keep an eye on the forecasts today and tomorrow - if it looks like it’s gonna end up being bad earlier along my route, I might leave a day early.
No idea an here: supposed to drive from Albany down to Manhattan on Christmas day., but now it says 2" to 20" of snow, 40-50 mile per hour winds, and sub-zero temps MAYBE. All maybes.
Yeah, I gather this is a really tricky one, since it’s going to hit just before or right on the holiday weekend, depending where you are. As of late last night, the storm mass that might drive heavy snow was still sitting north and west of Alaska, so…yeah. Lots of uncertainty. The various weather models are all over the place.
I’m glad you got to make a meme joke out of that. Way to go, you! Man why doesn’t the forum have a Like button right now?
