52 degrees when I woke up this morning, overnight low tonight is 9 degrees.

That does not help me plan my wardrobe for the day.

Here are some pics of the entry way to my house which currently co-functions as a beverage cooler:

Luckily this does happen all that often here in Minneapolis. It is like living on the plains of Canada, Scandinavia, or north Eurasia for a while! It ain’t cold 'till it hurts!

This is what Nest tells me:

Year | Nov | Dec
2012 | 152hr | 204hr
2013 | 164hr | 227hr

I thought maybe insulation would be a big differentiator for you but the guidelines (http://web.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/cgiwrap?user=roofs&script=ZipTable/ins_fact.pl) seem pretty close to what we build with standard in my area. My house, for example, has standard R12-14 in the walls, R5ish in the wrap. Not sure the R-value of the ceiling but “lots” is accurate and standard (it is common to have both a blown-in layer and an R22 batt layer).

I theory I should have all of that as well, as my house was built in 2008. There’s a draft coming from the gas fireplace, and another from the door leading to the walk-up unfinished loft (which is essentially open to the air).

Oh well. I’m moving to Cali soon so screw it!

Alabama is kinda screwed at the moment. The winter storm was far worse, colder, and much more moist than expected, and instead of getting 31/32’s they are in the teens and theoretically may hit single digits tonight. Everyone got caught out in it and suddenly everything is iced over and large portions of the city are a gridlocked mess. Am watching the ABC 33/40 livestream and James Spann basically said he screwed up the forecast. (Spann, by the way, is The Man.)

Again… SNOW IS NOT THE PROBLEM. Sheesh.

Such Weather

I remember my father saying when I was a kid when you get older you will hate the snow! I of course said never! ;)

My Dad was right - I travel for a living and snow has become the enemy!

Having lived in Pennsylvania most of my school years, I always had a good laugh about the response to “winter weather” here in NC.

“15 degrees outside?! 2 hour delay!”

“Slight dusting of snow expected?! School closed so everyone can go rush the stores for bread and milk!”

The difference, of course, is that the bulk of the South does not have the road treatment equipment that we had back in the the North. In PA, news of impending ice/snow would result in the roads getting pre-treated. I saw none of that yesterday, and as a result, even the slightest dusting/icing ends up with a ton of accidents. I read this morning of kids sleeping overnight in schools in Georgia, basically because they let them out too late and the roads ended up getting trashed. That’s crazy.

I’m also laughing a little inside at all the kids in our school system who are celebrating having the day off. The problem is, the school system doesn’t plan for even a single snow day in their calendar, so the kids have to make up the day on February 18th. They didn’t gain a day off, they just moved it up.

My wife’s uncle lives near Atlanta. On his way home from work last night he came to the crest of a hill doing 10mph, the road went down to an intersection then back up another hill. He tried to stop but went swooshing down the hill, straight through a red light and by the time he got to the top of the next hill he was doing 40, having never touched the gas and the breaks essentially being non-functional.

So anyone thinking of moving to California, be aware we are in year three of a drought that has cities starting to ration. My area is currently averaging 15 degrees above normal and has had less than .75" of rainfall since last July 1.

Our snowblower broke and we haven’t been able to get in our driveway for days. We have 3’ of snow and I’m too weak to shovel. Actually I’m not too weak, it’s just my heart and lungs are in terrible shape. Mind is willing but my chest is weak. My CF has been really bad this year.

Yeah I was out there last week and everything was kind of brown. Sad.

Yay, west coast winter storm incoming. Not enough to solve all our problems, but better than nothing.

That video will not play.

That video did play.

Well the weather in the Southern Hemisphere is (by all accounts received) just as bl00dy baffling as in the North. We have had heat wave conditions in the southern half of the continent, 40 degrees + Celcius and dry winds, whereas in the North an active monsoon has created 3 Cyclones (Hurricanes) already this season with another forming in the Coral Sea as I type. Mackay in Qld copped about 10 inches of rain with the last blow yesterday . . . . . But

So true and too funny!
