Yay. Only guesses I had were that and Great Expectations and I knew it couldn’t be the latter. I’ll also pretend this is the only movie I ever seen Hayden Christensen in so I can think of him as a half decent actor. The movie kind of makes me feel bad for Stephen Glass, but then he blew it on his own, so he has nobody but to blame but himself in the end.

If I recall the car is an Gremlin or Pinto or something crappy and long since dead now. I never even notice the lack of seatbelts or headrests.
The outfits those kids are wearing remind me of the school uniforms in Donnie Darko.
