I just looked at Yimou’s IMDB and good lord his contemporary movies are so much better than his period pieces.

I haven’t seen Raise the Red Lantern, but Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles and Not One Less are interesting character pieces, while Woman/Gun/Noodle Shop was terrible, and I don’t have fond memories of Ju Dou or House of Flying Daggers either. I’ve remember liking Yimou around 2004, but I’ve got the feeling now that he is off his game.
I knew I had seen that guy before. Although it was tough, because so many of those kung fu movies have a cowardly governor in them.
