Shit, did I really type Beer? I meant Whoops Apocalypse, starring Loretta Swit. And the second one I’ve now placed as The First Turn-On, a true classic of its genre.
Okay, here’s a second frame for this movie:

Nope, not Jackie Brown. That’s definitely a Caucasian woman back there. Another frame coming up.

And here’s a second frame from this movie:

Man, I missed a whole day of posts in this thread. You did that on purpose, Tom.
That mouth sure looks like Angelica Huston’s. So I’m gonna guess Crimes and Misdemeanors.

That looks like Martin Landau, too.
Oh duh. That’s certainly Martin Landau now that you mention it. Nice one.
Bingo!

I’ll never be able to shake the sneaking suspicion that you only got this one because you listen to that podcast that we do, but right you are! Woody Allen can’t even be bothered to worry about whether or not you can see the actor’s face. In Anglica Huston’s apartment, it’s as if it never occurred to him to wonder how to shoot around that cabinet. Sheesh. His movies are full of this kind of stuff because, I presume, he shoots so quickly.
Dude, let us see your freakin’ actors! Do more than one take! Get the blocking right. Figure it out!
Nice.
-Tom
Okay, maybe I got too obscure. I just thought there were more people on this forum who grew up in the 80s.
Below I’ve added a third frame from the movie.

-Tom
I’ve definitely seen this movie, I recognise the first frame. However, it was clearly otherwise totally forgettable, so it’s probably something like Critters. The second and third frames support this notion, but I’m terrible at recognising actors so who knows!
I’m in the same boat Krok, though the 2nd frame is very familiar to me too. Can’t be critters though as they wouldn’t leave any cattle behind. I’m going to go with a bit of a guess and say The Return (1980) . Cheating a bit with IMDB search but the description fits and also covers what I think for the film involving some sort of human/alien thing going on. I really wanted to guess something like Xtro early on but knew that couldn’t be it.
Well, it’s obviously something about alien encounters, but I never saw any of those movies besides Cocoon. Is it “We Come In Peace” with Dolph Lundgren?

Good guesses, but none correct so far. Also, those aren’t cattle in the first shot. They’re sheep.
I’ll post a final shot tomorrow, but I think it’ll turn out that most of you haven’t seen this. It wasn’t distributed outside its home country when it was released, which explains why I didn’t see it back in the 80s either.
-Tom
So it looks like this last frame isn’t going to help much, but here it is anyway (the fourth one below). I had hoped more people had seen this. I’ll post an answer tomorrow if no one can get it.

Damn, I never even heard of that. I demand a synopsis!
Oh, you rascal Tom. Yes, I had seen that first frame before but not the whole movie - it must have been from a retrospective on the director I watched a few years back.
Well done. I know it as Encounter at Raven’s Gate, but I believe it goes by both titles. So I’m guessing you haven’t seen it, but just managed to find it by describing the screenshots? Pretty sneaky, sis.
It’s available on Netflix’s instant view and I recommend it to anyone who has a fondness for that wave of awesome 80s Austrailian moviemaking that gave us freaky stuff like Razorback, Road Games, and The Long Weekend. Like those movies, it’s eerie and has some odd sexual undertones. There are even points of continuity with this week’s Qt3 Movie Club pick, Picnic at Hanging Rock.
The director is Rolf de Heer, and I haven’t seen any of his other movies, but I know his name. Adam, I think you were recommending de Heer’s most recent movie, Ten Canoes, in another thread. I’ve been meaning to see that as well. One of the funny things about Incident at Raven’s Gate is that de Heer couldn’t keep his hands off a crane he managed to get for the shoot. A fun drinking game is to take a shot every time there’s a crane shot. :) That first image I posted of the dead sheep around the dried-up cistern is an example.

Like I need a reason to drink. Ha!
Thanks Tom, I will be checking this out.
Yes, I did, in fact, cheat. In my defense, no-one seemed to be getting it, and finding an obscure movie just by searching on key words from a still image is harder than you might think. For the record, the winning search term was “aliens 80s movie dead sheep”.
Cheating or not, I’ve decided to declare victory and depart the field.
This might be too easy, but I’ll try it:
