Thanks for that, lol!

Kinda surprised that he’s not gone in the direction of martial arts action schlock. Dude coulda been the next Chuck Norris!

Ah, the infamous Cantona side suto!

Yeah, he was massively popular in the soccer world in the '90s. Mainly because of his talent, which was prodigious, but also because he was a genuine eccentric. He really stood out in contrast to both the overgrown man-children like Gascoigne, and the beyond-reproach-but-let’s-face-it-fairly-dull stars like Lineker.

I have watched two seasons of Borgen and I am in for season three.

Has anybody mentioned Lupin already?

It’s a modern day French series starring Omar Sy and Ludivine Sagnier. It is inspired by the classic adventures of Arsène Lupin, gentleman thief. And if you are familiar with the character, or like the idea of a series which has a gentleman thief coming from an underprivileged background as a central character, this might be one to watch.

I’ve only seen the first episode so far. But it was good. And it had a suitably entertaining heist. It also makes me want to know more about Assane, our main character.

I enjoyed Lupin. It’s clever and fun and mostly light, and the lead actors are appealing. They don’t really waste time explaining how Assane does some of the things he manages to do, you’re just supposed to grant that somewhere along the way he picked up a particular set of skills. I didn’t realize that the season was over and went looking for the next episode, so I guess cliff-hanger ending?

Borgen is a great series. There should be a Season 4 coming out next year, too. Looking forward to see how all the characters have changed in the intervening 9 years!

Hehe.

There is some truth to that. I do think that if you’re American or South European, Scandinavians will seem a bit cold and wooden to you. I’ve noticed this many times when watching Scandinavian series that have made the jump to English TV with Scandinavian actors. Interestingly, I don’t notice it at all as much when watching them in the original language.

Okkupert didn’t make much of a splash here in Norway - at least not that I noticed. Interesting about the ambivalence mentioned in the show, because there is not much ambivalence about Norwegians attitude to WW2 history. Where Denmark has done a fair few films and series where there is a certain amount of nuance about the resistance (i.e., to an extent, the Resistance engaged in terrorism and straight-up assasination - and not always of people one would consider guilty), the Norwegian public attitude to the resistance remains very much “Resistance fighters were 100% heroes” - end of story. I guess it takes a fiction work to go where historians don’t dare tread.

Yep. I re-watched the first episode with my wife and daughter and they are all in to keep watching. It’s a really entertaining watch. I’ll pretend I didn’t read that thing about the ending and look forward to seeing where the story goes. :).

A movie rather than a TV show, but Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest) is quite good. It combines a locked room murder mystery with unreliable narrator(s) to make for a good mystery and a strong payoff. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Does everyone else like Aunty Donna? It’s one of my favorite sketch comedies on Netflix.

Don’t binge this show though.

Clip:

I liked, but didn’t love it.

I LOLed. Like, ROFLed. Maybe even ROFLMAOed.

To me, Aunty Donna is Monty Python for the 21st Century. Silly, but clever, and very self-aware. I thought the dinner party with the Queen was brilliant.

I really like the subtle touches too. Like in the clip above, the screen aspect changes when the Drum wasn’t working. It’s great. Check out their youtube channel too.

Speaking of “Resistance” did anyone watch The Resistance Bank? I gather it’s about some bank in the Occupied Netherlands that worked against the Nazis.

Yes, some time ago. I recall I liked it. It’s not exciting, rather it’s a quiet and interesting bit of resistance history.

I recommend Lupin, though with the mild caveats that 1) as scott says, it’s only half a season, with a cliffhanger as the last episode, and 2) it starts off at its strongest, then peters out episode by episode.

The first episode is like a Hollywood blockbuster, with a splashy location, action scenes, and an effects budget. The second and third episodes don’t have so much surface flash and excitement, but rather go into the character’s background. But it’s well done, as you might expect from a good HBO-ish show.

… And then it feels like you’ve accidentally changed the channel to the CW for the fourth and fifth episodes, with the main character making stupid, bad decision after stupid, bad decision in order to make the plot work, despite supposedly being a mastermind. Let us hope that goes away for the second half of the season.

Re: Aunty Donna - It’s a little bit the same way, with the “everything’s a drum” sketch being brilliant but then nothing after quite hitting that high again. But still a recommendation.

We’re two episodes in and very intrigued. From what I’ve read, the back half of season one is more or less in the can and set for release this summer, so I’m not gonna sweat the cliffhanger others mentioned, but I’m definitely onboard with what this show is doing.

In the Dark is pretty good. Drama/Mystery about a blind woman who investigates the disappearance of a friend.
