It seems to be reviewing well, but in an “Everyone kind of likes it but nobody really loves it” way, which is a shame. And a bit odd, given how polarising del Toro usually is.
Well, it seems a project supervised by him. But at least he isn’t the director of the first one. Is he the director/writer of any of them?
I’m surprised it’s reviewing as well as it is. Saw the first two last night and found them middling. The first story (Lot 36) has nice cinematography, but otherwise these are very straight-ahead tales with few surprises.
I caught a bit of Cunk on Britain yesterday that someone posted on YouTube and it was pretty good. If I had to describe it I’d say it’s understated absurdity. I recognize the comic actress as the Ricky Gervais character’s terribly unhappy co-worker in the Netflix series After Life.
OMG, just dying watching the thing you linked to:
Philomena Cunk: “You know how when you store time in a clock: how do you get it out again?” (bemused look on the “science man’s” face)
I’m watching the second episode, now. I like the little intro the guy gives at the beginning of each.
Holy crap. Episodes 3 & 4 of Cabinet of Curiosities dropped tonight, and they are actually good! The third one works almost completely based on solid acting from F. Murray Abraham. The 4th because it presents a less common point of view, while being given space to develop the character and story.
I am sad to report that Cunk on Earth does not appear to be on US Netflix*, because our oligarchical overlords want us to sign up to Britbox, probably. This is very disappointing. Hope it’s still on the way.
*at least when doing a search on the Android mobile client.
Apparently, it’s coming to the US through Netflix according to news stories. Netflix just hasn’t said when it will happen.
Derry Girls season 3 took awhile to make it, but it was great.
Episode 3 of Cabinet of Curiosities is quite good. I’ve watched 1,2, and 4 so far as well: they are all fine, but suffer from being 30-minute ideas stretched out into a 1 hour format. (And 1 and 2 are also a bit old fashioned, feeling very Tales from the Crypt-ish. Perhaps not surprising, as 2 is based on a pulp story from the 1930s.)
I do like the little intros. Clearly del Toro is having a blast playing the Hitchcock or Serling role.
Yeah, I think the first episode was the weakest of the four so far. The third was the best thanks to F. Murray Abraham.
I’m excited for 5 and 6 since they’re both based on H.P. Lovecraft stories.
Yeah, it’s grown on me as well. My ranking so far would be 3 > 4|5 > 2 > 1. 4 & 5 confused me a little, though.

Two good horror movies I just watched over the past two days:
Barbarian
Hellhole
Barbarian reminded me of “People under the Stairs”, while Hellhole was a pretty cool cult horror movie.
I hope they at least got the Spinal Tap song on the soundtrack.
Ugh. Cabinet of Curiosities episode 6 is back to crap. Flat dialog that’s completely lacking in subtlety. Writing that constantly and tediously tells rather than showing. (Not) Ron Weasley is absolutely wooden throughout & the stupid anthropomorphic rat makes me want to stab myself for Halloween.
If you like Dragon Prince, there’s more of it. Sure, it’s just the first episode of S4, so people can remember that this series from the before times still exists, but it’s coming in hot on Netflix too.

That is great news. I really did like it, and thought it was just canceled because it has been so long since new episodes.
Anyone watching Exception? Reasonably hard SF and quite an interesting story I won’t spoil…
Agreed, what a shame. I did like the witch, though. And the rat guy, until they shot him from the front and ruined it.
