Is slavery integral to the Robert E. Howard stories? Can a show that leaves it out or does something creative and meaningful with it still be a Conan show that respects the stories?
The problematic elements of Howard’s stuff has been discussed at length on Qt3, and what I was trying to point out was that Funcom’s success may demonstrate that the source material wouldn’t necessarily be a minefield for the showrunner.
Sure. I didn’t mean to suggest that they couldn’t adapt it to modern sensibilities. Rather, that the result was as likely to piss off some Conan fans as please them.
I’ve still got a week left in Netflix. This month certainly had its highs and lows. I absolutely loved Umbrella Academy Season 2, but never really found anything else on Neflix that really blew me away. Maybe Umbrella was too high a note to compete with.
Excellent:
Umbrella Academy Season 2
Pretty Good:
She-Ra Season 1
Schitt’s Creek Season 3
Nadiya’s Time To Eat Season 1
Hunter x Hunter Season 4 (Greed Island Arc)
Passes the Time:
The 100 morons (Season 2 - four episodes in)
Boring:

I guess I was hoping for something else to really grab me, but didn’t get it this time. I’ll try Great Pretender next.
Did you try Teenage Bounty Hunters?
Nice one! I just found the thread and watched the preview. That looks like it could be just the thing. Thanks!
Oh, my bad, I misunderstood what “cultural updating” was referring to, there. Edit: specifically, I thought you were saying the racism in the stories might be too problematic for a good modern adaptation.
Teenage Bounty Hunters would justify another month of sub.

I recently watched The Order and found it quite enjoyable. If you are a supernatural fan, you should like it.

That show is hilarious. I passed on it until I saw people here talking about it. It takes every cliché about teenage girls and bounty hunters, blends them well and comes out way better than anyone would expect.
Yep, I’d say the OITB/GLOW crew have proven themselves once again. I hope S2 of TBH is not delayed too long.
As is the new Attenborough, about the 6th extinction.

Did you try any of the Marvel shows? Jessica Jones or Daredevil are generally pretty good, if 3-4 episodes too bloated per season.
Old Guard is a fun Netflix movie.
Happy, The Witcher, Halt and Catch Fire, Love Death and Robots, Stranger Things, Unbelievable, Sense8, Uncut Gems, Santa Clarita Diet, The End of the F**king World, Russian Doll, Bonding, Night on Earth, etc?
Just the first season - second one is lukewarm garbage.
Just finished watching it. Sobering. The second half tries to be optimistic about the future, but I’m not feeling it.
Out of these, I did watch the first season of Jessica Jones, the first 4 or 6 episodes of Daredevil, Stranger Things, Uncut Gems, Santa Clarita Diet, The End of the F**king World Season 1 and Russian Doll. All solid recommendations except for the Marvel shows, which I didn’t care for.
I’ll look into Old Guard, Happy, The Witcher, Halt and Catch Fire, Love Death and Robots, Unbelievable, Sense8, Bonding and Night on Earth at some future time. Thanks! Hopefully none of those are like the Marvel shows, and more like the rest of your list.

Netflix just added a show called Song Exploder. It takes a well known song and interviews the artist about it. They talk about how they made the song, the inspiration, how it affected them, very cool if you are into music. Only 4 episodes are up. Genre’s all over the map to, from REM to Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Guessing that must be the podcast branching out into TV.
Song exploder has been a podcast for years (193 episodes!) and has been consistently fascinating.
It’s about the only way I discover new music these days.
