Russell Okung is still unsigned.

Look 5 posts up : )

Officially that’s true, but even NFL.com has his details listed and he is “in the building” at Seahawks practice today.

Whoops!

I’m glad I’m not a Bronco fan. Dumervill probably out for the year, among other injuries, and today I see that his replacement just broke his hand. He’ll still be able to play, but he’s likely out two weeks at least.

I just can’t imagine this possibility will catch any officials by surprise. If we can think of how to game that rule in about 20 seconds, I guarantee it’s going to have occurred to the officials as well. I’m sure they’ve got a plan in place to keep teams from trying to game it.

Given the rather increasingly dire news about long-term head injuries for football players, the rule is obviously meant to protect players in the event of an inadvertant helmet coming off. Intentionally removing the helmet should have a very severe penalty.

Seems like a pretty dumb move if that’s the reasoning. How many concussions are there in the NFL every year? Lots. How many were the result of a player losing his helmet? Maybe one or two, though I can’t remember the last time that happened.

It seems to me that the way to cut down on injuries is to mandate a change to equipment such that it protects both the wearer and the other player. Currently, equipment is designed to protect the wearer only, and actually causes more damage to other players.

Taking off your helmet to kill a play would net an unsportsmanlike conduct call at the very least, and would probably qualify as a “palpably unfair act” – in which case they can eject the player and award a touchdown.

15 Yards (and disqualification if flagrant)

Unsportsmanlike conduct.

Palpably unfair act. (Distance penalty determined by the Referee after consultation with other officials.)

Touchdown Awarded (Palpably Unfair Act)

When Referee determines a palpably unfair act deprived a team of a touchdown. (Example: Player comes off bench and tackles runner apparently en route to touchdown.)

So the player can tossed (and I’m sure there’s an automatic fine that goes with that) and the refs can award a TD. I don’t think players will be gaming it too much.

Looks like Haynesworth finally passes his test.

Here’s The Onion’s take on his situation.

hahahahahahaha

I think I just became a Bronco fan…

It starts tonight, ma boyeeez! Cowboys and Bengals, 8PM EST on NBC. Your football-less weekends have come to an end!

Who the hell watches preseason football? Especially when it’s the Cowboys and the Bengals?

(Don’t worry, I’ll tune in for a bit…)

Yeah, pre-season games are worth at least a few min to check out the first team offenses.

I actually like to see the unknown guys make some plays.

After a while of reading pre-season coverage, you’re definitely dealing with diminishing returns. EVERY TEAM HAS IMPROVED!

I’ll watch Niner preseason games all the way through, because I like to see the rookies and the guys who are actually fighting for jobs, but with teams I don’t care about I have a hard time staying interested even past the first quarter.

This, I do the same thing with the Pats, cuz I enjoy the macho soap opera of training camp.
