This show both a lack of understanding of the league AND a lack of reading comprehension of the above few posts. Congratulations!
By cannot be true, you must mean, shouldn’t be true. Because it is very much true.
It’s why so many contracts are front loaded, why players push for guaranteed money, etc.
It is 100% true. Contracts are full of funny money. The only thing that matters is the guaranteed amount paid up front. That’s why guys like Albert Haynesworth can sign a $100 million contract – he’ll never see the last few years or the money in it, but it sounds good and the agent gets more people to sign with him.

Right. What I mean is: surely no competent agent allows their player to sign a contract where they’re really at risk of signing up for, say, 5 years, $20 million with $18 million coming in the last year. Which is of course not at all clear from my previous post; I have not had my coffee yet today.
That happened a lot in the late 90s/early 2000s because agents pushed for it in order to get ‘biggest contract in the history of contracts!’ on their resumes, even though everyone knew it wouldn’t ever happen. Not to that extreme of course.
And it’s a handy poison pill/early contract termination point that bypasses the ‘deion rule’ on signing bonuses.
Not that extreme, no, but take a look at Haynesworth’s contract – it’s basically 4 years, $48 million, not 7 for $100M.
In year five, he’s slated to get $29 million dollars.
Players aren’t, by and large, fooled by those back-loaded deals. They know that only the early parts are realistic. But, hey, it sounds really cool to have a BIG MONEY deal, and you never know, maybe you’ll be so indispensable by then that they’ll actually honor the contract – and even if they won’t, now you’re negotiating from a position of “how much of a reduction from $18 million is fair?”
Assuming you’re not really giving anything up on the early parts, there’s little reason not to put some fantasy numbers in at the end.

Mike Williams comeback attempt is starting to get some national attention in a positive way. Receivers is actually one area the Seahawks seem to have pretty good depth with, given Housh, Carlson, and the positive talk about rookie Golden Tate as well. All they really need is one of the group of Williams, Branch, and the remaining Holmgren-era holdovers to produce and Seattle should be fine in terms of having a good receiving corps.

My Raiders are set to lose to Dallas tonight. It should be fun. Hopefully Campbell doesn’t get killed behind our still HIGHLY SUSPECT offensive line.

But but Al said we were going to have a winning year even if Heyward-Bey can’t catch anything.
You mean the young Jim Plunkett?
I’d settle for Heyward-Bey being able to run ten yards without falling down.
I like Jason Campbell, but heavens, he’s in the wrong system. Al Davis likes to air it out deep, and Jason Campbell is allergic to anything past seven yards.

I think we’re going to see a lot of screen passes this year mixed with some DHB slants and 10-15 yard routes to Murphy/Schilens (if he can stay on the field). I don’t think Hue is going to try to force the deep ball when we have a center and RG who are turnstiles out there.
At least I hope not. :(
Yeah lol. Some of that was the awful offensive system he was in, and some was that he had an awful o-line. But most of it is the fact that Campbell just isn’t a risk taker. He won’t throw INTs that will kill you, but he also won’t make any plays that will win the game for you.
Campbell has the arm to go deep. But not the mindset.

Al seems to be letting Cable do his own thing, though, so hopefully for Raider fans that means they can taylor the offense to Campbell’s strengths and not base it on Al’s overall theories.
Back in the NFC West, Leroy Hill is apparently injured and will miss the next three weeks, though he would be back for the start of the season. Except that he hasn’t really practiced with the team at all, as they’ve been keeping him out of practices due to his off-field issues. So he has limited familiarity with changes that have been made since Carroll took over. And there continues to be speculation that the team might just cut him rather then deal with the off-field distractions any further, distractions that could include jail time in two different states.
Oh and the 49ers may have lost Glen Coffee, their 3rd rounder from last year and second leading rusher last season. He’s supposedly retiring. And their 2008 first rounder, Kentwan Balmer, also looks to be leaving. While neither guy is a key part of the 49ers, it does make me wonder what’s going on inside the locker room. Maybe they are just tired of Singletary.

Weird stuff going on in Niner camp. 2008 first round bust Kentwan Balmer has been AWOL from camp for 5 days, and apparently now the team is looking to recoup $960,000 of his $1.6 million bonus, which implies he won’t be back. Today last year’s third round pick, RB Glen Coffee, announced his retirement. Who goes all the way through training camp and quits two days before the first exhibition game? Maybe he was inspired by the Jetblue guy.
edit: Darn you and your sneaky edits. I doubt it’s that Singletary is wearing out his welcome, most of the team seems to be behind him. The rumour is Coffee is a hardcore Christian and will be going into the ministry. No idea what’s going on with Balmer, if anybody knows they aren’t talking.

The Pats are taking some injury hits, notably losing Ty Warren for the year as well.
