Yeah, the QB spot is really holding the 49ers back. If those rumors about the Pats not being too sure they want to commit giant dollars to Brady are true (probably not) then the 49ers need to be all over that.

Speaking of 49ers QBs, how is Carr looking? Some people seemed to think he might still have a chance to show his talent after those relatively stable years in New York. He can’t be worse then Smith, who seems to lack the intangible known as “accuracy.” ;-)

Smith had accuracy problems all night, but seemed to get the ball out quicker. Carr put the ball right on the numbers, but also held onto it way too long and took a couple of sacks. He also looked a little jittery in the pocket.

The only one who looks like a natural QB is the Nate Davis, who’s going into his second year. I’d really like to see him get some first-half minutes in the preseason against the #1 defense, because he looks awesome against the scrubs. Unlike Alex Smith, when he rolled out to get away from the rush he was actually able to hit a receiver on the run. Smith did basically the same thing earlier in the game and the ball sailed over the receiver and out of bounds. Apparently Davis doesn’t look as good in practice, and may not know the whole playbook. However, I’d much rather have a gamer like Jeff Garcia than a practice guy like Tim Rattay. If they just go out there and run AFT on passing downs, I’m okay with that. Alex Smith will never win a playoff game, even if the rest of the team can carry him into the playoffs. Carr may yet turn it around, but he’s not the answer right now. I’d rather just throw Davis out there and let him learn.

I just stumbled across the new 49ers stadium site. That’s definately different.

Westbrook is reportedly signing with the Niners. As long as he doesn’t get his bell rung (another concussion), he’s a good pickup for them.

Man, I don’t know if I’d play anymore if I was him. From the outside view, he’s taken far too many hits to the head and is only selling his future health a greatly accelerated rate at this point.

Yeah. My guess is one more concussion and he retires. Hope it doesn’t come to that, or if it does, he recovers from it.

If he stays healthy, he could be a hell of a third down back.

Apparently Redskins fans were so sure he’d sign there that someone prematurely updated Wikipedia to say he was a Redskin. Sorry sucka!

I think he look at the crowded Skins’s backfield early on and realized that there wouldn’t be a lot of carries for him, so I was pretty sure he wasn’t going to sign with Washington. It just dragged out way too long.

I personally think his healthy days are way behind him.

Ouch. Eli was bleeding pretty bad there.

I was just commenting to my daughter that I was surprised Eli Manning was still in the game tonight when he got his forehead split open on a shot to the back that popped his helmet off. That was one of the bloodier moments I’ve seen in a football game.

The story I read said he left after the cut. Did he come back in?

Hell no, and he really shouldn’t have been in there at that point of the game to begin with.

YouTube has it in what passes for HD.

I like the pickup. Even if the Reverend Glen Coffee had stayed, he wasn’t going to draw much respect from opposing defenses. Westbrook goes in to spell Gore, he’s a legit threat in rushing, receiving, and (this is important yet often overlooked) blocking.

Wow, quite the combination of hits. And it does look like his helmet wasn’t strapped on properly.

If Eli was a hockey player, he would have been stitched up and back out there for the second half.

Second half hell, he’d have been out there for his next shift!

If it was a regular season game I would have expected that. Not in preseason, though. Some people may consider Eli overrated, but he’s still a lot better then the current alternatives on the Giants roster. Unless you consider Rhett Bomar or Jim Sorgi to be of value, of course.

I think Eli is a good QB. He simply suffers a bit in comparison with his brother. He’s one of the better QBs in the NFL.

Did they instantly blow the play dead as per the new rule?

Eli wasn’t carrying the ball. The new rule only applies to the ball carrier. Despite the strange tangent up thread, there is no chance that the new rule will be exploited. It’s much easier to just tackle a guy than to try to rip his helmet off.
