Ironically, the team Palmer is coming from is the new thug team. I was just reading a roundup yesterday and for Cincinatti they mentioned some young receiver with great potential if he can clear up his off-field problems.
It’s an All In move for the Raiders to make a playoff run this year.
Bear in mind that their starting QB, JC, is not signed for next year, so there was a good chance they needed a starting QB anyways, and no matter what you say, Carson Palmer is probably going to be better next year than any rookie drafted.
It’s Oakland. The Sarajevo of America. If there was any city that would justify building a wall around it and floating it out to sea, it’s Oakland.
It’ll take an Act of Pope to counteract Raider Nation and actually make the Raiders a decent (in terms of character, not skill) franchise again. The players might be okay blokes, but the weight of history and the embarrassment of Raider Nation will always be a millstone around the franchise’s neck.

Yep, and it won’t work out. We’ve seen how teams with a “we’re one move away” strategy perform. Redskins fans have been crying about it for years. As long as the Raiders keep giving up draft picks in exchange 30+ year old players, they’ll always be “one move away”, and always coming up short.
There are reasons why the consistently top tier teams (Patriots, Steelers, Packers, etc…) build through the draft.
The Eagles are suffering through a similar experience this year.
You might be adding the Bengals into that list in a few years. Two first rounders next year, at worst two second rounders the year after that; if they draft halfway intellegently this is going to be a stacked team in a two to three years.
It’s Cincy. They’ll find a way to fuck it up.
He made the one pass he had to make. I’ll take it, there’s no way he is going to be stellar every week. And haha, no he is not elite. Good God.
You have to admit, people often mention him in the same breath as Aaron Rodgers.
I can say “Aaron Rodgers is a good quarterback while Alex Smith is a turd” in one breath, so I suppose that’s true.

“Alex Smith is no Aaron Rodgers” is the phrase I hear the most. :)

That Palmer thing is crazy. Two first rounders is way to much for the guy, even if it does mean a playoff appearance this year. If the Raiders were a Superbowl contender I might see it, or if they were getting a QB who had put up top notch numbers in recent years, maybe.
As an aside, the Raiders draft pick situation isn’t apparently quite as bad as it looks as they will get compensation picks for some of the free agents they lost this year.
Also, there is a rumor out there (from an SI writer tweet) that the Raiders have offered McFadden to the Jets for Plaxico.

The most common debate I see is “Would Aaron Rodgers have sucked if Nolan had drafted him instead of Alex Smith?” And I think the answer is yes, but I also think Alex Smith would not have won a Super Bowl with the Packers.
The Carson Palmer deal is all upside for the Bengals…and honestly, a lot of potential for the Raiders.
If Palmer comes in, gets in the groove and really pushes that offense…they could not just make the playoffs, they could do deep into them. Heck, maybe they get lucky and sniff the big game.
That said, he is 31, hasn’t played at all this season and wasn’t looking that great last time he played.
A longshot with a lot of cost? Yes. But a shot with a really high potential upside? Especially if Palmer can be your franchise guy for the next five years… At least some teams are giving it a shot at going big time or going home.
If Palmer can play at an above average level for the next five years, he’s worth it. It’s hard to find good QBs.

Is this really true, though? They actually have quite a lot of draft picks stocked up if I recall, so they didn’t mortgage their future with all the new free agents/trades. Now if you’re simply indicating that they’re not drafting well, then that’s a more persuasive argument.

Palmer’s best season, arguably, was 2005. That’s also the year he was injured in the playoff game. He threw for over 4000 yards the next two seasons but hasn’t had a QB rating above 90 since 2006. You can legitimately argue that he was hurt by bad Bengal teams, but the 2009 Bengals went 10-6 and he still only managed an average season.
Keep in mind that last week NFL.com had a piece where they suggested that a smart trade involving Palmer to the Seahawks would be for a good rookie reciever and a 2nd rounder. How Palmer’s value is suddenly a #1 and a #2 (that becomes a #1 if the Raiders win a playoff game this year) is hard to fathom.

Yeah no surprise there. And even though the Raiders do some crazy things, I can’t imagine why they would trade DMC for yet another receiver.
Yeah, this. I cannot think of another sane reason anyone would talk about the two together.
