Thats actually a better outcome than a first down, from the Saints POV. First down means you get the ball back with almost no time. Now you need a TD, but you have a timeout and the two minute warning.

And I know you can’t really expect anyone to pass up a TD like that, but if he sits at the 5, they run almost all the time off the clock and kick the winning FG. This is waaay too much time for Brees.
