The Playstation 4

I finished the demo content for Nioh. I have to say it reminds me of a faster, more interesting Lords of the Fallen, for better or worse. The enemy animation in both games is more mechanical than the Souls series. I don’t know how FROM tuned everything to look natural, but in Nioh it feels like I’m fighting robots going through each of their moves.

Co-op super-duper sucks due to the lethality. Hosts get killed by the bosses too often. Networking is very poor too.

I’m sure I’ll play this regardless, but I hope they do a lot of tuning prior to release.

Christ, a 9.3GB update for Bloodborne? I mean I have a fast connection but Sony sure doesn’t. Steam would have been done awhile ago.

I also couldn’t figure out why my system was stalling on an OS update download till I saw that update taking priority, which was by no means obvious from the update screen. They should add a ‘Go to Download queue’ button on that page while showing the download just frozen.

Replaced my PS4 hard drive with an SSD pretty much just because of Bloodborne. It took the loading times down from annoying to only slightly annoying.

My controller however, on top of the sticky R1 button, now has a rapidly degrading thumb grip. Has anybody bought any replacements for them? I would prefer something like the old IBM trackpoint cat tongue, it’s kind of like sandpaper and has an excellent grip. All I see though are the smooth kind, which my thumb slips off easily, forcing me to press harder, and therefore destroy the grip even faster.

I think you can use any stick that fits, even ones from the very first dualshock.

In somewhat related news, I’m looking for a replacement circuit board for my dualshock 4. It’s in good cosmetic shape, but the bluetooth is totally broken and it’s annoying to use it wired.

I’m having problems trying to use the PSN store this morning. It’s telling me my credit card is invalid, but I’ve tried both my credit and debit cards (both of which I’ve confirmed still work). Tried it on two different items in the store, and it was working yesterday.

Anyone else running into this today?

Tried adding my PayPal account too, nothing’s working. I see a handful of people posting about what sounds like the same issue on the PlayStation forums in the last 24 hours, but the responses are all (somewhat understandably) dismissive, along the lines of “are you sure your payment info is valid?”

So hopefully something is just slightly broken on the PSN side and it will be remedied soon.

Ever since that first hack on PSN years ago in the days of the PS3, I’ve never given Sony any credit card info again. I go through the rigamarole to buy PSN points from Amazon, and then cash that in, and then I use that to buy stuff on PSN.

Sep 7 official:

So the fan in my PS4 was obnoxiously loud all the time (even just watching blu-ray movies), and since my PS4 is out of warranty, I took the drastic step of replacing the fan and re-applying thermal paste to the CPU/GPU. iFixIt has a nice step-by-step guide and videos for replacing the fan. You’re basically disassembling the whole bloody thing to get to that fan. It took me about an hour to complete and, boy, what a difference. It’s virtually silent now. I paid $15 for the replacement fan off eBay, not bad.

That Playstation event scheduled for September 7th? Likely to be a Neo and PS4 slim reveal. In fact, someone in the UK already snagged a slim from a shop owner:

It’s not as good looking as the original. (If that’s a real picture).

Eurogamer sent a reporter to visit with the guy who bought the alleged Slim PS4. It’s totally real and they have video of it booting up:

Since this thing was even in sealed retail packaging I expect it will be announced with immediate availability during the Sept 7th PlayStation meeting.

WTF - their service is slow as crap now and goes down too much. Browsing their own stupid store is like pulling teeth.

Expect MS to follow suit immediately.

Xbox Live Gold is already $59.99 MSRP for the year. This just brings Sony’s price up to Microsoft’s level.

Ahh, that makes sense. That’s why they did it then.

Maybe MS will say, “Xbox Live is such a tremendous value, we also have to raise our price $10” and it will go to $70 a year.

Weirdly, the “real” price of both subscriptions is still reversed if you’re looking for bargains throughout the year. I found PS+ several times a year for $40 for a 12 month subscription. It’s quite common. And Xbox I found for $33-$38 for a 12 month subscription several times a year. Even though Xbox is supposed to be $10 more for a while now. I don’t know why the sales prices end up that way.

I think the wholesale price of Xbox Gold subscription cards was traditionally just much lower since it was originally designed to be a high margin upsell. PS Plus launched as a service that included a bunch of games you could play so Sony had to build that expense into what they charged retailers.
