Is it possible to wipe the custom OS and install Steam OS? It is x86 after all.

Shuhei Yoshida is saddened by mixed reviews of Knack and the PS4 launch.

Q: The PS4 software reviews so far have been average or in some cases, worse than average. As the head of Worldwide Studios, what’s your reaction to this? Are you worried about the impact on PS4? The PS3 suffered from a lack of great software but the system did well in the end, so how important is it to have that “system seller” at launch?

Shuhei Yoshida: Yeah, it’s disappointing to see some of the low scores. I haven’t spent enough time reading reviews, but I would characterize them as mixed. And with this launch there are lots of games coming out, so the media must be very busy going through the games quickly, and especially since the online functionality wasn’t ready until in the last couple days. So we have to look at how much time they spend on what aspect of the games and how that may be contributing to some of the lower scores. It’s disappointing but I don’t think it’s worrisome for the launch of the system. I’ve played through all of our games, Killzone, Knack and Resogun, and I totally enjoyed playing through these games. I’m now on my second run of Knack and Resogun at a higher difficulty - these games really grow on you when you play more. I’m very confident that once you purchase these games and play, you’ll be happy that you’ve done so.

That would be cool, though I imagine Steam would have no idea how to talk to the hardware.

Ahahahahahah no.

Post of the year.

Agreed. I forget who made the gnome cavern gold mechanic image from that Teiman post, but I think it’s time for the individual to step up and do another one for the latest Teiman gem. Maybe we can do this annually… they’d make spectacular Christmas ornaments and decorations.

I don’t know. Did you see his commander of ants Battlefield post? Teiman is on fire lately. Although given the “subsection” post, maybe he is actually on fire. Someone should check on him.

I just read in a review that the PS4, like PS3, doesn’t have an IR port. Those of us with Harmony remotes would need to buy another $60 Logitech adapter (not even announced yet). I wasn’t expecting anything better, but there it is.

I’m more annoyed by the fact that my PS3 Blu-Ray remote won’t work with the PS4. Whose stupid idea was that? I hope it’s something that will get fixed in the countless upcoming firmware patches.

A bit weird that they show there Kinect party clone that uses the camera that is optional and being touted by many the reason they bought a PS4. Also as far as I know there is no Kinect party like software for the X1 at launch what a twist of events.

Mine is shipped!

It seems like Assassin’s Creed & Killzone are getting the best reviews; I’ve settled on AC as my one launch-day title (along with a couple of online store purchases, I expect).

Mine is shipped as well, currently in Phoenix, AZ according to tracking.

That ain’t right…

I like guns quite a lot, and I could watch fruit get blown to smithereens all damn day, but I can’t help but feel like he could have donated that PS4 to a children’s hospital or something.

I’ll admit, I don’t get it. Is the idea of shooting PS4s and Ipad Minis to generate shock value or something like that? I’m just a little baffled since I didn’t find it shocking or particularly interesting. I’m apparently missing the point of this sort of thing. :)

Yeah, someone does that stuff with every piece of sexy new hardware.

It’s probably more fun with stuff like fruit that actually reacts to the force of the bullet - when it’s just a PS4 it’s like “ooh! A bullet hole just appeared out of nowhere!” and then it falls over. Yay?

If you watch to the second round of shooting he utterly destroys the PS4 by shooting it in the front. I enjoyed watching the slow mo shock wave behind the bullet going through the system and seeing the plastic deformation of the entire case lagging the bullet. It’s also to watch it basically tear the thing apart as it reaches the back edge which has all sorts of flaws, allowing the tensile stress from the plastic deformation to basically initiate a massive fracture backwards through the system to release energy, tearing it apart.

I am, however, an engineer who works on the theoretical side of similar problems, so it’s just really cool to see things in real life that I normally see only in representations of equations. And it would have been equally cool to see the deformation in, say, a 200 lb block of clay.
