Got Resogun up and running. Sweet game. I like how the announcer’s voice plays through the controller speaker.

Downloads and installs aren’t nearly as clunky as the PS3. It feels like a real system now.

Remote play. So hot right now. Remote play.

Nice looking Netflix UI update (well at least in the Kids view, I haven’t looked at the standard all genre interface). They must have updated the client to coincide w/ the PS4 release.

They changed the interface on a bunch of devices recently.

Yeah, everything will be getting the new netflix UI. My rokus got it today.

Just looked at BF4 - have to say, it doesn’t look as good as BF3 did maxed on my PC. Not even really close.

Got mine from Amazon today. Loving it so far. Remote play is indeed very cool. I really hope Sony releases the PS Vita TV to the US market so that games like NFS Rivals and Knack that support two player mode across PS4 and Vita can use it, it would be a really cool dedicated two person LAN setup to avoid having to splitscreen co-op games without having two full consoles. Works fine with a Vita but would be even cooler with PS Vita TV on a full-sized monitor.

I’ll parrot the controller being a huge upgrade. After holding it in my hands and fiddling with it for just a few seconds it was like wow this is way better than the DS 3 which I thought was pretty crummy. I feel the offset analog sticks off the Xbox are better still but I can live with this controller fine.

A friend here got his, plugged it in, and it doesn’t work :/ Tried the HDMI and HDD removal fixes from online, but no go. Sometimes the light strip lights up, sometimes not so much. And support was jammed up, so he couldn’t reach anyone. Fortunately, one desk down, another guy had his going. I’d seen the pictures, but I was still shocked at how tiny the box is. And yes, the controller (I’d held it before, but was reminded) is really nice.

There are definitely some “first pass UX” things in there (you can play once you reach a certain point in downloading\installing, but when he hit the limit of what’s installed, it bombed out and asked him to fill out an error message rather than gracefully saying something like “Install incomplete”; when you quick-suspend a game, the game card still says “Start” instead of Resume, lots of little things like that), but overall it seemed pretty neat.

For those of you upgrading the hard drive:

Heads up for those swapping hard drives. I kept getting error ce-30776-3 when trying to reinstall the system software from a usb flash drive.

  • most usb flash drives won’t actually fit because of how narrowly recessed those ports are on the front. Pretty stupid design if you ask me. I hope you have a usb extension handy.
  • two different types of sandisk usb flash drives gave me the above error for some reason. I properly formatted to fat32 and created the proper dir structure (\PS4\UPDATE). I finally had to use a sd card reader and an old 1GB sd card and that seemed to work. It’s finally installing now…

I got my PS4 up and humming nicely, installed and played with some apps like Netflix post-firmware update, and since the PSN store is down plugged the PS3 back in and dove back into Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen. The PS3 controller immediately felt like junk in my hands, after spending 10 minutes with the DualShock 4.

I’m in UPS hell, they failed to deliver it today after being Out for Delivery since 8am. Location now listed as the depot that is 3 miles from my house. I offer to go pick it up tomorrow at the depot, as opposed to waiting until Monday when they want to ship it to me now. They inform me that despite what the tracking site says, it’s not actually at that depot!
Hopefully they figure out where it actually is, and I’ll see if I can just pick it up tomorrow.

Day One Impressions - Good and the Bad

  • Controller feels great
  • PS4 smaller than I thought, in a good way
  • Remote play makes the already awesome Vita better
  • Speaker in the controller… I know the Wii had it, but damn if it wasn’t awesome the first time it chirped up in Killzone
  • Vudu, Netflix, Amazon Prime all up and going without a hitch
  • Clear privacy explanations during setup of what would be shared and with who
  • UI does not feel next gen - at all
  • PS4 not next gen quiet; it’s not distractingly loud but it is noticeable (and more so during Killzone I’ve found)
  • Limited multitasking (depending on what you launch, games will either suspend or close)
  • Anyone else finding that their PS Plus did NOT roll over?
  • Downloading and installing Killzone still meant a near hour wait before the game was running
  • PS4 did not recognize my home network until I rebooted the machine

? Will admit that next gen graphics look better, but not much better
? How tall is your character in Killzone? Four foot what?
? Thought of testing what would happen if I put in a CD… realized I no longer own any
? Touchpad… used it in Killzone and it felt gimmicky; hoping there are better uses

Very small detail, but does anyone who picked up a PS4 know if there’s a universal setting for inverted look? It would be nice not to have to set it for every individual game like on PS3.

I had no idea this was possible on PS3, I would use it on every system if it had it.

Non inverted lookers are WRONG. =p

It was not possible on PS3. It was only possible on Xbox 360 (from launch, I might add). Cyrano is saying he doesn’t want to have to change the setting in every individual game like he had to on the PS3. By contrast, on my 360, I just had to set it once when I first created an account, and never had to set it again in any 360 game.

Up and running. 1.5TB hdd shows 1314 gb free. Resogun is pretty awesome. All my other games are still downloading. Dual shock 4 is pretty great too. Briefly tried vita remote play. How do you properly quit from it?

Especially shallow impressions - I broke my thumb playing flag football this past weekend, and console games don’t work well with only one thumb:

  • It took a pretty short time to get up and running - the background updates while I did setup were a nice change from my big complaint with the PS3, where every time I wanted to do everything it felt like I had to wait 20 minutes for a system patch.
  • The system just looks good. The slanted setup may be a little too cute, but it’s surprisingly small and just looks much more modern sitting next to my PS3 and 360.
  • The UI was nicer than the PS3, but I don’t think I’d call it a huge leap. All of the apps that I tried out looked basically identical to the PS3 versions, hopefully there’s some improvement there as the developers get more time to play with things.
  • The controller is definitely satisfying; I was one of the people who liked the PS3 controller, and I’ve always found the Xbox controllers way too large. The PS4 controller is about as large as I could possibly want it, but it’s not too large, and the sticks and triggers feel great.
  • Watching my wife play ResoGun, it looked great and I can’t wait. I’m pretty sure I’ve created a monster. There isn’t much else in the launch lineup that I’m interested in at the current prices; I’m definitely in the “somewhat disappointed that Knack ended up sucking” camp. I suppose I grabbed the PS4 just because I’ve never had a console on day one before, and I don’t really regret it, but I can’t wait for the more quirky and niche stuff to start coming out next year.

BigWeather is my PSN ID, feel free to friend me – need more Qt3 folk!

There’s some sort of global PS+ issue. Had the same problem on the store when accessed via computer.
