True. And I hope that turns out to be the case. That the service has enough discounts and bonus games to make it totally worth it for years, thereby making the whole rental aspect of it moot. But one thing that was different with Xbox Live is that my friends had all bought into that eco-system already by the time I got into it. And then I evangelized my family members into getting it too, so we could all play online too. I tried to get interest in the PS4 going over the summer with both groups, but once the XB1 ditched the always online-drm and all that, everyone switched back. Not all of them will buy the XB1 at launch, but they’re all sticking with Xbox Live for multiplayer, so inevitably, that’s where I will stay for multiplayer too. I can’t be the only person switching to PS+ for multiplayer. That would be fairly pointless. There would have to be a big Playstation-only release that all my friends will want to play that will get them to switch over.

But as far as whether the service will offer as much value as it did with a mature PS3 library: we’ll see. I’m just not willing to take it on faith, that’s all. I’ll wait and see what titles get added to the free games library, and when it reaches a certain threshold, I’ll consider jumping in.

But then you will have missed all the games that were offered before. With the exception of a few games that everyone gets when they join PS+ most games are rotated every month. Surely you get at least one game every month so if you wait one year then you may miss out on 12 games. Even if only 6 of them are decent then surely that is worth $50 on top of the multiplayer capabilities that you get.

Been watching my son play Rivals some and it looks like a blast. I can tell he’s going to spend hundreds of hours just chasing other players around.

Been having a weird sound bug the last few days. When I boot up the system there is no sound. After a restart sound comes back.

I’ve had that happen a couple of times when coming out of standby mode. It will work if I plug headphones in the controller but nothing to the TV so makes me think its something with HDMI sound. I also had to fully reboot to get sound all the way back.

Rivals is rather awesome and works great on with the Vita controls too. I broke down and picked up AC4 Black Flag. I’ve only played 1 & 2 but so far really enjoying #4. The 1080p resolution, better rain, better textures, and smooth framerate are all nice perks being on next gen. Man, PSN day 1 digital is like a direct line to my wallet that I don’t even feel.

This also happened to me once in the last 20 hrs of use. I power cycled my receiver and sound came back so it’s some sort of hdmi handshake between the two devices.

I just started my first remote download from work on my home PS4.

I have finally loosed the last shackle of Gamestop blackmail forcing me to go into their disgusting stores to purchase games. I now get games not only on the day of release, but ready to play when I get home from work on that same day.

I will never have to set foot in a Gamestop again. This is a glorious day, only to be matched by watching the slow and painful collapse of Gamestop over the next few years.

I have it posted in the Killzone thread but my PSN name is: gately912 if anyone wants to add me. Killzone multi, resogun high scores, need for speed rivals, etc.

PS4 costs $381 to build according to IHS estimate, only $18 less than retail price.

That’s very impressive, a brand-new console not being sold at a loss. Brave new world.

What do the retailers make out of the $400 price? Surely it’s not zero?

AI opponents only. The same way as if you manually disable Alldrive in the options, I believe.

Oh, good point. So it’s still being sold at a loss, but a much smaller gap than before.

The 20GB PS3 materials cost was $805.65 at release, for a console selling at $499, a loss of $306.85 on materials alone. Then you’ve got marketing and (as you pointed out) retail markup.

I think they said they are even when the user buys a pair of retail $60 games. So they are selling it at a loss, but for a small quantity.

Had my first night with my new PS4 last night. Resogun is a blast. Best free money I’ve spent since the last good free PSN+ game ;)

Also dl’d Assy Creed 4 and Injustice UE last night. Ended up spending more time with Resogun though. The only hitch with Resogun is no local Coop.

Retail markup? I bet you they make more selling an extra DS4 than on the console.

Definitely, accessories are a cash cow. But they still make something on the console. And then there’s marketing costs, which are significant, and R&D too.

Tried vita remote play over the internet. My home connection is a 24/3 fiber to the premises uverse connection. Vita was on a wifi network with very good bandwidth and signal strength. I was able to power up my PS4 and connect without issue. No port forwarding needed (upnp is enabled on my asus rt-ac66u). Overall I was really impressed with the video and sound quality. It was better than what I expected. Input lag was quite noticeable. I played a few games of Resogun and it felt like a slow LCD HDTV that wasn’t put in game mode. It wasn’t unplayable but it definitely impacts gameplay. Still, very cool it just worked.

Well they do put big disclaimers about it being intended for wifi :)
