On the deck of the Lincoln, flight crews, cameras and dozens of reporters who had been flown to the ship from San Diego awaited his arrival.
Although most of the sailors aboard were kept off the deck during landing, a loudspeaker announced that there was to be “no cheering” until Bush had been officially piped aboard after exiting the plane. “At that time, you’ll be allowed to cheer as loudly as possible, and you’ll be encouraged to show your affection,” the disembodied voice said. It then warned that there was to be “no spitting on deck.”
