Pretty sure they are referring to these explosive incidents at Russian Strategic Bomber bases deep within Russia and hundreds of miles from the border.
Russian patriotic channels are convinced that this attack justifies nuclear retaliation cause this is one of the bases that can be used for nuclear strikes.
For the Nth time after the flagship sunk Russian High Command must realize there’s no reasoning with Ukranian Nazis who just don’t understand hints, they should give the order to win the war instead of continuing gentle persuasion of Ukrainians losing >100k soldiers in the process.

The only winning move is global thermonuclear war, duh.

Mearsheimer is pretty scared of the subject, if there is one video you should REALLY watch is that one, its the debate of the year with the two biggest on-hand contributors to international policy, Carl Bildt is no lightweight either.
While watching, pay attention to the vitriol in the commentary section…

If Putin was truly worried about Russian security and had been visionary, he would have furthered democracy in Russia and applied for both EU and NATO membership. The world could have been a different and better place.

I mean, support means sacrifices, so there is a majority of people not willing to make sacrifices to support Ukraine.
That IS something indeed.
But then Russian culture would be LGBTized and all Russian children would be turned into transgender slaves, so it’s obviously not a real choice.

Where’s the profit in that?
But seriously, I was thinking about that last night. If Russia had lucked into a strong visionary leader that actually desired to make Russia a better place they could have been a great partner to Europe and all those petrodollars could have been used to transform the country.

There are reports that Iranian loitering munitions may be having problems in cold weather. Would like to see this confirmed elsewhere, but it would be nice if Ukrainian civilians gets a bit of a reprieve this winter.

Today the Budapest Memorandum turns 28. Might be a useful reminder for those that demand Ukraine negotiate with Russia and cede territory in order to end the war.
Yeah but he’s an idiot and a coward

Russia was obviously tricked into signing that, thus it has no legal basis anymore.
Mearsheimer is basically arguing, in several pieces, that the war cannot be allowed to continue — because of the grave danger of nuclear escalation — and that it would be better to end it through diplomacy now. The basis of that diplomatic solution would apparently be a guarantee that Ukraine becomes a neutral party, neither part of the EU nor aligned with NATO. But he also grants that Russia is unlikely to give up the territory they’ve taken so far. So, QED: Ukraine must give up sovereignty and territory and citizens to secure peace and stave off nuclear war.
To me it really is like Europe 1938. Sure, we risk a nuclear exchange, but what’s the alternative? Russia isn’t going to stop invading their neighbors if we give them this one.
You can’t stop Hitler from being Hitler any more than you can stop Putin from being Putin. Trust your eyes on this one.

It really was a missed opportunity, one which could given Putin a transforming and positive historical legacy.
I’ve just formulated a plan to fake my own death, to be activated if Isaac Chotiner ever calls me asking for an interview.
TL;DR: Mearsheimer’s full of shit, he’s made his name on a academic theory that’s been proven sorely lacking by recent events, so he’ll twist the facts to suit his pet theory instead of actually reckoning with its shortcomings.

The problem isn’t NATO or Ukraine or America. The words that Putin puts in the mouth of the Russian govt don’t matter.
The problem is that Putin is a thug in a ring of ex-Soviet thugs that found his thuggishness was never seriously challenged, and who seems to believe that the Soviet Union was actually about Great Russian dominance over Eastern Europe.
I don’t believe that Russia would invade Western / Central Europe, but given a free hand and enough lifespan it’s clear Putin would eventually move to reintegrate most or all of the former Soviet nations back into the Russian fold. Including Belarus, parts of Moldova, and the ‘stans. If he had infinite time he’d eventually probably try to blockade / cutoff the Baltics and, over decades, ruin their economies and cause enough internal disruption that (however they fell apart) they could be maneuvered back into the Russian fold as well.

If the passive threat of nuclear makes the rest of the world give into Putin it will be a clear sign that nuclear blackmail works great and he can probably get even more with active threats of nuclear war.
